Pain reliever

Shown in the following rows are results for the determination of acetaminophen (in milligrams) in ten separate tablets of Excedrin Extra Strength Pain Reliever. ... [Pg.98]

Some simple benzoates are also used as antiseptic agents. Salicylic acid esters are used as antibacterial agents and pain relievers. Analgesic balms, creams. [Pg.396]

The following model is a representation of acetaminophen, a pain reliever sold in drugstores as Tylenol. Identify the hybridization of each carbon atom in acetaminophen, and tell which atoms have lone pairs of electrons (gray = C, red = O, blue = N, ivory = H). [Pg.29]

Among the most common over-the-counter drugs you might find in a medicine cabinet are mild pain relievers such ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and acetaminophen (Tylenol). [Pg.34]

Aspirin, a commonly used pain reliever, is a weak organic acid whose molecular formula maybe written as HC9H7O4. An aqueous solution of aspirin has total volume 350.0 mL and contains 1.26 g of aspirin. The pH of the solution is found to be 2.60. Calculate Kb for aspirin. [Pg.362]

Naloxone should be administered with great caution and only when necessary in patients receiving a narcotic for severe pain. Naloxone removes all of the pain-relieving effects of the narcotic and may lead to withdrawal symptoms or the return of pain. [Pg.174]

It is added to pain relievers because it enhances the effects of aspirin and because many headaches are caused by caffeine withdrawal. Caffeine closes down blood vessels by competing with adenosine, and helps alleviate the vascular headaches caused by withdrawal. [Pg.158]

Tramadol is a pain reliever (analgesic). Its action is similar to opioid narcotics such as codeine and morphine, but it does not depress breathing the way the others can, and less often leads to abuse and addiction. [Pg.178]

Acetylsalicylic acid is more commonly known as aspirin. It is used as a pain reliever, fever reducer, and anti-inflammatory. [Pg.182]

Acetaminophen is a pain reliever similar to aspirin, but it does not have aspirin s anti-inflammatory properties—or its undesirable effects... [Pg.182]

It serves as a pain reliever in liniments and ointments. It is a rubefacient, meaning that it can dilate blood vessels. [Pg.186]

One example of a familiar amide is the pain-relieving drug sold as Tylenol (14) we shall see another important example when we consider the polymer known as nylon in Section 19.10. Many amides have N—H bonds that can rake part in hydrogen bonding, and so the intermolecular forces between their molecules are relatively strong. [Pg.880]

Naphthalene has been used as a moth repellant and an insecticide, but these uses are decreasing due to the increasing use of para-dichlorobenzene instead. Derivatives of naphthalene are used in dyes and drugs. An example of the latter is the pain reliever naproxen (sold in drugstores as Aleve ). Some anthracene derivatives are also used as dyes. [Pg.84]

Analysis of ibuprofen, the active ingredient in several over-the-counter pain relievers, shows that it contains 75.7% carbon, 8.8% hydrogen, and 15.5% oxygen. The mass spectrum of ibuprofen shows that its molar mass is less than 210 g/mol. Determine the chemical formula of this compound. [Pg.158]

The atoms in the molecules of these pain relievers are covalently bonded. Electrons are shared between atoms in a series of single and double covalent bonds. The covalent bonds in aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen are similar to those found in methane and carbon dioxide. [Pg.65]

Drawing a Conclusion Explain why different pain relievers are manufactured and sold. [Pg.68]

Wager s first step was to see if giving people a placebo would lead them to report less pain. Despite what he had read about the placebo effect, he was not convinced that it would. To find out, he and his colleagues induced pain in healthy volunteers with electric shocks. Sometimes the investigators put a placebo cream, which they described to subjects as a highly effective pain-relieving medication , on the subjects arms before shocking them. Sometimes they shocked them without the cream. In either case, the subjects had to rate how much pain they felt. [Pg.120]

Histamine also induces antinociceptive (i.e. pain-relieving) responses in animals after microinjection into several brain regions [73, 74]. H, and H2 mechanisms are significant and both neuronal and humoral mechanisms may be involved. Brain H2 receptors appear to mediate some forms of endogenous analgesic responses, especially those elicited by exposure to stressors [75]. Many of the modulatory actions of histamine discussed above appear to be activated as part of stress responses. For reasons that remain unclear, histamine releasers, such as thioperamide, show only mild, biphasic antinociceptive actions, even though histamine is a potent and effective analgesic substance. Outside the brain, both H and H3 receptors exist on certain types of sensory nerves and activation of these receptors promotes and inhibits, respectively, peripheral nerve transmission related to pain and/or inflammation [76,77]. [Pg.262]

Another potential benefit of UHPLC is its capability of solving the most challenging separation tasks in pharmaceutical analysis. Figure 9.4 shows a UPLC method developed to analyze pharmaceutical formulations used to treat the common cold. Cold products often contain multiple active ingredients to treat different symptoms and can contain decongestants, antihistamines, pain relievers, cough suppressants, expectorants, and numerous excipients of various polarities. The analysis of a total of 20 components was achieved within 10 min. [Pg.255]

The analysis of human plasma for acetaminophen, the active ingredient in some pain relievers, involves a unique extraction procedure. Small-volume samples (approximately 200 fiL) of heparinized plasma, which is plasma that is treated with heparin, a natural anticoagulant found in biological tissue, are first placed in centrifuge tubes and treated with 1 N HC1 to adjust the pH. Ethyl acetate is then added to extract the acetaminophen from the samples. The tubes are vortexed, and after allowed to separate, the ethyl acetate layer containing the analyte is decanted. The resulting solutions are evaporated to dryness and then reconstituted with an 18% methanol solution, which is the final sample preparation step before HPLC analysis. The procedure is a challenge because the initial sample size is so small. [Pg.303]
