Chemical resistance, plastics coated resins

Vinyl dispersions are fluid suspensions of special fine particle size polyvinyl chloride resins in plasticizing liquids. When the system is heated to about 350F., fusion (mutual solubilization of resin and plasticizer) takes place. The dispersion turns into a homogeneous hot melt. When the melt is cooled below 140F., it becomes a tough vinyl coating with excellent physical properties such as flexibility, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance and excellent aging. 

Epon resins [Shell], TM for a series of condensation products of epichlorohydrin and bis-phenol-A having excellent adhesion, strength, chemical resistance, and electrical properties when formulated into protective coatings, adhesives, and structural plastics. 

Innovation in the fabric softener business not only focused on compositions, but also on packaging. As an alternative to plastic bottles, heat-sealed flexible polyethylene pouches were introduced to the market in the early 1980s [7], followed by several other containers free-standing flexible pouches with a solid base, different bag in a box rigid units, and refill cartons coated with chemically resistant polymers. The first commercial blend of this type is Cylon . Here PVC is the matrix, and PA (that melts below 215°C ) the dispersed phase. The two resins were compatibilized using the well known PVC plasticizer — Elvaloy (a terpolymer of ethylene, carbon monoxide and acrylics). These soft to semi-rigid alloys were commercialized for wire coating, automotive applications and blow molding [Grande, 1997 Hofmann, 1998]. They are flame, abrasion and chemicals resistant, easy to process, and tough. 

In common with most plastics, polyester resins have good all-roimd resistance to chemical attack and corrosion, but all significant conditions must be known before a particular resin is specified. Improved corrosion-resistance is usually based on iso- or terephthalic acid and neopentyl glycol, giving good mechanical properties. Epoxy resins enjoy a combination of fast, easy cure, high adhesion to many surfaces, and heat and chemical resistance, which leads to a U.S. market of 600 million Ib/yr with a wide range of uses in plastics, coatings, and adhesives.
