Apart from this study, there has been growing interest in cross-conjugated systems containing diethynylethene (DEE) with several DT rings because of potential applications for various optical properties as well as two-dimensional it-conjugation network [63-65]. There is a wealth of research publications about diacetylene-extended cross-conjugated systems we briefly summarize selected examples in this section [66-70]. 

There is much current excitement and activity in the field of homogeneous hydrogenation using ruthenium catalysts. This is reflected in the recent, explosive increase in the number of research publications in this area, now rivaling those for rhodium catalysts (Fig. 3.1). Meanwhile, the price of rhodium metal has risen dramatically, becoming about ten times that of ruthenium, on a molar basis. The number of reports on the use of osmium catalysts has remained low, partly because of the higher price of osmium compounds - about ten times that of ruthenium - and partly because the activity of osmium catalysts is often lower. 

Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) sets standards for food safety and inspects meat, poultry, and egg products produced domestically and imported. The Service inspects animals and birds at slaughter and processed products at various stages of the production process, and analyzes products for microbiological and chemical adulterants. FSIS also informs the public about meat, poultry, and egg product food safety issues. FSIS works with the Research, Education and Economics mission area on food safety research issues and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service on instances where animal diseases impact food safety. FSIS also facilitates the management of US activities pertaining to the Codex Alimentarius Commission, an international organization created by the United Nations, to promote the health and economic interests of consumers while encouraging fair international trade in food. 

The American Chemical Society took pride in the role it had played in the recruitment of chemists for research on chemical warfare and it was largely responsible for the publication of the results of their work. A series of articles appeared in the widely read Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry designated as "Contributions from the Chemical Warfare Service," summarizing the techniques and findings useful to the wider study of chemistry (39). When the War Department attempted to abolish the Chemical Warfare Service in 1919, the ACS cooperated in a campaign of publicity about the work of the Chemical Warfare Service and contributed in a major way to its survival (40). Many chemists who formerly had worked in the Research Division delivered public addresses and wrote letters in support of the continuance of the Chemical Warfare Service to newspapers and to members of Congress.

As many as 10% of children have a medication-responsive psychiatric disorder (Riddle et ah, 1998) and there has been a dramatic increase in the use of psychotropic medication to treat mental disorders in youth (Rappley et ah, 1999). Multiple factors account for this increase, including scientific advances in fields such as epidemiology, nosology, neuroscience, drug development, and clinical measurements, and efforts to educate the public about the benefits of early, effective treatment. Despite large gaps between research and practice, many medications are used in children on the basis of a small amount of scientific data. Factors that contribute to this situation are societal desires for rapid, effective treatment, acceptance of medication as a therapeutic modality, and a reimbursement climate in which there is increased pressure for brief treatment. Clearly there is a need to balance clinical and administrative pressures with a resort to treatment based on the best available data. 

Inadequate diets, with too few fruits and vegetables, are a cancer risk, and they are common. Fully 80 percent of children and adolescents26 and 68 percent of adults27 do not eat the five servings of fruits and vegetables per day recommended by the National Cancer Institute and the National Research Council. Publicity about hundreds of minor hypothetical risks, such as pesticide residues, can cause a loss of perspective about what is important. In a survey, half the U.S. public did not name fruit and vegetable consumption as protective against cancer.28... 

Recourse to the precautionary principle does not necessarily mean adopting final instruments designed to produce legal effects that are open to judicial review The decision to fund a research programme or even a decision to inform the public about possible adverse effects of a product or a procedure may themselves be inspired by the precautionary principle.40... 

The journal that specializes in research reports about flow techniques and flow analysis (as well as image analyis) is Cytometry. Its paired publication is Communications in Clinical Cytometry. The Journal of Immunological Methods is also often useful in this regard. 

In Chapter 3 of this report, the committee presents a systematic framework or matrix to characterize the properties of biomarkers as a means to inform scientists and the general public about biomarkers and their significance in biomonitoring studies. The framework generally summarizes what is known about a biomarker and indicates potential research gaps that need to be addressed to meet the requirements for some specific uses.

In the past fifteen years the situation with regard to the technology of molybdenum disulphide lubrication has stabilised in many respects, and a measure of consensus has been reached about some of the mechanisms involved. The use of molybdenum disulphide has become routine in some industries, and there are many well-established and reputable commercial products available. Except in the high-technology field of physical deposition techniques, especially sputtering, the output of new research publications has fallen from perhaps two hundred a year in the nineteen-seventies to fewer than ten a year in the nineteen-nineties. 

Such gloomy forecasts have ignited new research efforts and advisory programs to educate the public about dietary and lifestyle modifications to prevent and control these conditions.
