In a prospective study (Jenike et al. 1991b) of 11 severely ill patients with OCD who underwent bilateral anterior cingulotomy, the researchers assessed the patient s condition before and 6 months after the procedure. Two of the patients improved more than 50%, four improved 25%-50%, and two were unchanged. One of the patients who improved more than 50% was assessed 1 year after the operation, and his improvement level had diminished to 15% from baseline. After the surgical procedure, some patients may gain more relief from the different treatment modalities that were previously ineffective. 

Interesting research assessing the influence of select nutrients on apo A-I expression has been published (reviewed in Mooradian et al.36). Among some of the nutrients associated with decreased expression of the apo A-I gene in cell culture or animal models are polyunsaturated fatty acids, trans-fatty acids, omega-3 fatty acids, glucose, antioxidant vitamins, and zinc deficiency. In contrast, monounsaturated fatty acids, soy proteins, alcohol, and copper deficiency are associated with increased expression of the human apo A-I gene.

High doses of vitamin C are popularly recommended for the prevention and treatment of the common cold. Evidence from controlled trials is unconvincing. Chalmers (1975) reviewed 15 reports and considered that only 8 reports met the basic criteria of well-conducted scientific research. Assessment of these 8 reports gave no evidence of any beneficial effects. Similarly, Dykes and Meier (1975), reviewing only those reports that had been published in peer-reviewed journals, concluded that there was no evidence of any significant benefit.

This chapter was written to provide abrief discussion of instrumentation, present the advantages and disadvantages of specimen preparation techniques for biochemical research, assess the sources of error and artifact, provide selected examples of applications, and outline general experimental procedures, where they can be prescribed appropriately.

Another group of researchers assessed the nse of dispersants in cold water in a large outdoor test vessel [95]. The effectiveness of the dispersant was greatly reduced compared to when used in warmer water.
