In a prospective study (Jenike et al. 1991b) of 11 severely ill patients with OCD who underwent bilateral anterior cingulotomy, the researchers assessed the patient s condition before and 6 months after the procedure. Two of the patients improved more than 50%, four improved 25%-50%, and two were unchanged. One of the patients who improved more than 50% was assessed 1 year after the operation, and his improvement level had diminished to 15% from baseline. After the surgical procedure, some patients may gain more relief from the different treatment modalities that were previously ineffective. [Pg.477]

Interesting research assessing the influence of select nutrients on apo A-I expression has been published (reviewed in Mooradian et al.36). Among some of the nutrients associated with decreased expression of the apo A-I gene in cell culture or animal models are polyunsaturated fatty acids, trans-fatty acids, omega-3 fatty acids, glucose, antioxidant vitamins, and zinc deficiency. In contrast, monounsaturated fatty acids, soy proteins, alcohol, and copper deficiency are associated with increased expression of the human apo A-I gene. [Pg.159]

High doses of vitamin C are popularly recommended for the prevention and treatment of the common cold. Evidence from controlled trials is unconvincing. Chalmers (1975) reviewed 15 reports and considered that only 8 reports met the basic criteria of well-conducted scientific research. Assessment of these 8 reports gave no evidence of any beneficial effects. Similarly, Dykes and Meier (1975), reviewing only those reports that had been published in peer-reviewed journals, concluded that there was no evidence of any significant benefit. [Pg.383]

Sheikh A. 2000. Publication ethics and the research assessment exercise reflections on the troubled question of authorship. J. Med. Ethics 26 422-426. [Pg.641]

This chapter was written to provide abrief discussion of instrumentation, present the advantages and disadvantages of specimen preparation techniques for biochemical research, assess the sources of error and artifact, provide selected examples of applications, and outline general experimental procedures, where they can be prescribed appropriately. [Pg.75]

The engagement of researchers in policy-making processes should be better recognised in the context of assessment of scientists and research institutions, highlighting the value for society, an example of which is the UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) of the Higher Education Funding Councils (Scott et al., 2005). [Pg.439]

Appreciation of the need for real quality standards must therefore be one of the con siderations during the conceptual studies by the product research department of the large multinational companies and by a market research assessment of the potential market slot. It requires an assessment of the market the product is intended to satisfy, followed by the incorporation of these market requirements into the first paper designs. [Pg.102]

The Nursing Home Survey on Patient Safety Culture uses provider and staff perspectives to assess their nursing home s safety culture, identify areas where improvement is needed, track changes in patient safety, and evaluate the impact of interventions. The survey also lets researchers assess safety culture improvement initiatives in nursing homes (AHRQ Publication No. 08(09)-0060). [Pg.509]

Another group of researchers assessed the nse of dispersants in cold water in a large outdoor test vessel [95]. Several series of tests were conducted using Forties crude oil and a dispersant composed of Brij 92 and Brij 96 in salt water at — 1.6°C. The effectiveness of the dispersant was greatly reduced compared to when used in warmer water. The biodegradation of the dispersant-treated oil was reduced compared to that of the control and the population of heterotrophs initially decreased in all tanks, but soon recovered. [Pg.499]

Standardized medical examination carried out as part of a clinical trial or as part of an overall screening battery in a research assessment during the first 6 wk after birth (NNNS) or across the first year (INlB, NENI)... [Pg.129]

The researchers assessed the accuracy and reliability of the questionnaire by examining the content reliability from experts with updates and corrections and the test reliability by finding the discrimination power by using item-total correlation, which measures the performance of SMEs in the discrimination (r) range from 0.329 to 0.731. To test the tools reliability, Cronbach s alpha coefficient was used, and the performance measures of SMEs had alpha coefficients ranging from 0.738 to 0.850. [Pg.231]
