While physical chemists have focused attention primarily upon van der Waals interactions in their attempts to understand why molecules or molecular fragments attract or repel each other, we have taken the position that much can be learned with regards to the role of nonbonded interactions in chemistry within the framework of one determinental MO theory. In other words, we have tried to convey the message that the answer to why chemical entities attract or repel each other may be obtained by reference to a fundamental bonding theory like OEMO theory. In this section, we develop a theory of nonbonded interactions from that standpoint. [Pg.23]

As in other areas of natural products chemistry, studies on insect chemical defenses comprise several different aspects first come the isolation and structure determination of the compound(s) responsible for the defensive activity. The next step is the total synthesis of the identified compounds, in order to confirm the proposed structure, usually deduced from spectroscopic data only, and to get enough material for biological testing. Biosynthetic studies to determine the origin of the active compound(s) (biosynthesis by the insect itself or sequestration from the diet with or without metabolization) are sometimes performed. DDT enters an insect by dissolving the thin layer of fatty substances that repel water from the waxy outer skin and then paralyzes vital nerve centers. Muller was disappointed to learn that he was not the first discoverer of DDT 65 years earlier, a graduate student Othmer Zeidler had synthesized the compound as part of his chemistry doctoral thesis. Zeidler described many of DDT s properties and developed the method used to make it commercially, but he did not discover its insecticide powers.
