Reliable delivery

Although the chemical products purchased from distributors are not usually one of the largest cost items for the customers, the importance of those chemicals to these customers overall operations is often very high and purchasing a multiplicity of chemicals is often very complex. As a result, important elements of customer satisfaction are timely and reliable delivery as well as appropriate products and services. 

Well known examples in other, even mature, industries such as Procter Gamble in packaged consumer goods, Dell in consumer electronics, Wal-Mart in retailing, and Toyota in the automotive sector prove that outstanding performance is achievable and can contribute to the company s overall success through tailored service levels, fast and reliable deliveries, and lean and cost-effective operations, even in a complex environment. Though not directly comparable, these industries have developed solutions that, appropriately selected and tailored, can be of tremendous value and serve as a reference for all branches of the chemical industry. 

The gas chromatograph as inlet (Fig. 12(b)) permitted reliable delivery of amounts of explosives to the analyzer, and limits of detection were reported as <2pg for TNT and <4 pg for PETN. The measurements were comparatively fast with most explosives eluted in times below several minutes, some as low as 9 s (for DNT) and none more than 4 min (for PETN). These early findings with field-dependent mobility instrumentation suggested that the favorable chemistry of IMS could be combined with the simple instrumentation of FAIMS or DMS and that the strong electric fields show no ill effect on gas-phase ions for explosives. The next step in development with field-dependent mobility instruments was a micro-fabricated DMS analyzer. 

Murashige [48] has proposed the concept of artificial seed as an approach to the mass propagation of elite plant varieties. Artificial seeds are expected to be a reliable delivery system for the clonal propagation of elite plants [49-51]. The delivery system has the potential for genetic uniformity, high yield, and low cost of production. Hairy root methodology is one of the promising candidates as material for artificial seed. 

Presoaked lenses are considered a more efficient and reliable delivery system. However, the soaking of lenses in ophthalmic formulations to incorporate the drag into the lens may cause toxicity to corneal epithelium because preservatives, such as benzalkonium chloride, have a great affinity for the hydrophilic contact lens material and are concentrated in the contact lens. Contact lens for sensitive wearers may also cause foreign-body sensation, blurring and decreased oxygen tension on the corneal surface resulting from occlusion by contact lens. 

Today s high potency drugs, intended for local and systemic treatments, depend on reliable delivery systems. As an alternative to squeeze bottles and pipettes, propellant-driven or mechanical-dispensing systems are often used. Aerosol systems are well known in inhalation therapy. They are ready to use and easy to handle. While new propellants will replace the old ones, the environmental and pharmacological discussions will continue. The switch to new propellants must be supported by sufficient clinical and toxicological data. In particular, compatibility problems must be addressed. Furthermore, attention must be paid to the surfactants not under dispute. 

Where the feedstock has an intrinsic value c.g. it can be used as a fuel in other processes (and, thus, there is some competition between procurers), the independent assessors of the project will require to see evidence of its long term, reliable, delivery in sufficient quantity to satisfy the needs of the project Some measure of price stability will be necessary, for example by linking fiiel purchase price to recognized and appropriate cost indices. 

To avoid having to depend on one supplier, companies are wise to identify several sources of key reagents, starting materials, and intermediates. Cost, quality, and reliable delivery are critical parameters. 

To ease production schedules, key intermediates may be outsourced from vendors. Reliable delivery of outsourced materials is crucial to making key production goals. By requesting that materials arrive some weeks before they are needed, the company can build a hedge into a campaign schedule. As the success of and demand for the product rises, a company may qualify several suppliers to ensure continued supply of key intermediates. 

TIP Anticipate probable addition times on scale, and if appropriate add the key reagent in laboratory experiments over this length of time. In the laboratory, syringe pumps are very useful for reliable delivery of small volumes over an extended period. 

Suppliers are selected and monitored through a process that takes into account product quality, service reliability, delivery time and financial viability. 

The expected investment costs to establish a reliable delivery system must be evaluated depending on local conditions and the number of distribution stages. 

The sales step is only part of the overall customer experience with an e-tailer. Providing convenient on-line ordering is certainly important, but if the firm doesn t back it up with prompt, reliable delivery of the product or service, the customer is unlikely tp return. For this reason, customer leadtimes are a critical issue in e-commerce systems.

Among the major characteristics of consistent customer orientation are the ability to make fast and reliable delivery commitments (volume, deadlines) and to dependably adhere to them.

In theory, the metrics in the SCOR model include delivery reliability (delivery performance, fill rates, perfect order fulfilment). 

In industrial markets, too, the same pressures on purchasing source loyalty seem to be at work. It is perhaps not surprising that as more and more companies adopt just-in-time strategies, with minimal inventories, they require even higher levels of response from suppliers. The demand is for ever shorter delivery lead times and reliable delivery. The pressure on suppliers is further increased as these same customers seek to rationalise their supplier base and to do business with fewer suppliers. Becoming a preferred supplier in any industry today inevitably means that a high priority must be placed on delivering superior customer service. 

Do customers really want fast delivery, or is reliable delivery more important even when slower ... 

An additional problem for terrorists is the need to have a reliable delivery system. Effective dissemination may be even more difficult than obtaining the agent, especially if the objective is to cause a large number of casualties. The "art" of CWs includes the research and development of special munitions that, among other things, do not inactivate the agent by the thermal effect of the explosion. Aerosolization dispersal systems are another option.
