In nanotechnology, dimensions of interest are shrinking from the fiva to the nm range. For many microelectronic devices, such as laterally structured surfaces, particles, sensors, their physical as well as their chemical properties are decisively determined by their chemical composition. Its knowledge is mandatory for understanding their behavior, as well as for their successful and reliable technical application. This presents a challenge for TOF-SIMS, because of its demand for the unique combination of spatial resolution and sensitivity. 

Thus, a reliable technical measure is required. It may be designed in the same way as for class 3, but the additional heat release rate due to the secondary reaction has also to be taken into account. The use of thermal characteristics of the scenario in the design of technical measures is presented in detail in Chapter 10. 

Rockwool is a reliable technically oriented provider of insulation materials for the building industry. It is a company mostly involved in business-to-business or B2B marketing, which requires a solid image (see Appendix 15-1). For the Live on Your Roof concept a different image might be required, perhaps that of a life-style designer. It might be better to set up a separate little company under a different name to try the concept out. This new company can more easily make consistent noises on Live on Your Roof than Rockwool as a whole can do. It may have to work in quite different ways. 

Unfortunately, federal regulators chose not to use a waste classification scheme in developing the national program. They cited the lack of a reliable technical data base as their reason. As a result, the public perceives all hazardous waste as equally threatening and lethal — even though this is far from the truth. Moreover, the public also cannot now distinguish very well among facilities, particularly between land disposal ones such... 

Two fundamental approaches exist for analyses of product reliability Technical or statistical analysis of damage cases. 

In most instances, buyers have to choose among a set of suppliers by using some predetermined criteria such as, quality, reliability, technical capability, lead-times, etc., even before building long-term relationships. To accomplish these goals, two basic and interrelated decisions must be made by a firm. The firm must decide which suppliers to do business with and how much to order from each supplier. Weber et al. (1991) refer to this pair of decisions as the supplier selection problem. 

A significant survey response indicated the importance of both design and service features to advance roller compaction technology (33). There seems to be an assorted blend of needs that are due in part to vendor past performances, such as reliability, technical support programs, and service history. Changes in the coal s particles size, which are either intended (e.g., grinding) or are attributed to intrinsic processes in the gasifer (e.g., fragmentation), need to be quantified for reliable technical adaptation. Last but not least, the interaction of the coal bulk with the applied machinery will result in wear, which should be assessed before plant construction. The most relevant calculation procedures and coal tests regarding these granulometric properties will be presented in the following sections. 

However, poor reproducibility at intermediate concentrations and efficiencies limits the ability to differentiate between the cost-effectiveness of alternative additives. Similar difficulties have been reported with respect to the evaluation of corrosion inhibitors in refinery processes and other applications and in testing the effect of surfactants employed as corrosion inhibitors and/or anti-foulants on the water tolerance of jet fuels (WSIM test). The limitations of screening tests emphasize the inadvisability of undue reliance on them and the need for following such tests with careful plant studies to obtain reliable technical and economic data on anti-foulant applications. 

There were indications from the events at Three Mile Island that numerous personnel in the control room acted to congest and confuse the reactor operators control room activities. Review of this accident also shows that there existed a lack of reliable technical data and other records on which to base accident recovery decisions. As a result, today licensees are required to establish Technical Support Centers whose staff have access to plant technical information and who are responsible for engineering support of reactor operations during an accident. Personnel in the Technical Support Center must be able both to assist the control room when needed and to diagnose and mitigate an event. Until the Emergency Operations Facility is activated, the Technical Support Center will also perform the functions of the Emergency Operations Facility. The Technical Support Center is located close to the control room inside a protected and shielded area to allow fast access for face-to-face discussions with control room personnel.

X-ray tubes are used in a broad variety of technical applications the classical application certainly is the radiographic inspection. For the penetration of high-Z materials, relatively high power is required. This lead to the development of X-ray tubes for laboratory and field use of voltages up to 450 kV and cp power up to 4,5 kW. Because of design, performance and reliability reasons, most of these maximum power stationary anode tubes are today made in metal-ceramic technology. 

Polynomial root finding, as in the previous section, has some technical pitfalls that one would like to avoid. It is easier to write reliable software for matrix diagonalization (QMOBAS, TMOBAS) than it is for polynomial root finding hence, diagonalization is the method of choice for Huckel calculations.

The basis for evaluation of piston speed varies throughout industry. This indicates that the subject is spiced with as much emotion as technical basics. An attempt to sort out the fundamentals will be made. First, because there are so many configurations and forms of the reciprocating compressor, it would appear logical that there is no one piston speed limit that will apply across the board to all machines. The manufacturer is at odds with the user because he would like to keep the speed up to keep the size of the compressor down, while the user would like to keep the speed down for reliability purposes. As is true for so many other cases, the referee is the economics. An obvious reason to limit the speed is maintenance... 

Electronics cleaning - For most uses in the electronics industry, ozone-depleting solvents can be replaced easily and, often, economically. A wide choice of alternatives exists. If technical specifications do not require postsolder cleaning, noclean is the preferred technology. If cleaning is required, the use of water-soluble chemistry has generally proved to be reliable. There are however limitations, whereby water-soluble chemistry is not suitable for all applications. 

Incorporating human reliability is a function of education, training, ergonomics, stress, and physical condition. Incorporating this accurately into PSA is difficult. References for doing this are Gertmann (1994) and Dougherty (1988) as well as the many technical reports.

The only feasible procedure at the moment is molecular dynamics computer simulation, which can be used since most systems are currently essentially controlled by classical dynamics even though the intermolecular potentials are often quantum mechanical in origin. There are indeed many intermolecular potentials available which are remarkably reliable for most liquids, and even for liquid mixtures, of scientific and technical importance. However potentials for the design of membranes and of the interaction of fluid molecules with membranes on the atomic scale are less well developed.
