Electronics cleaning - For most uses in the electronics industry, ozone-depleting solvents can be replaced easily and, often, economically. A wide choice of alternatives exists. If technical specifications do not require postsolder cleaning, noclean is the preferred technology. If cleaning is required, the use of water-soluble chemistry has generally proved to be reliable. There are however limitations, whereby water-soluble chemistry is not suitable for all applications.

Further, VMS materials are not regulated as "hazardous air pollutants" (HAPs) and are not controlled under National Emission Standards for HAPs (NESHAP) requirements or the Clean Air Act National Ambient Air Quality Standards. In 1994, VMS materials were included on a list of acceptable precision and electronics cleaning substances under SNAP. In addition, VMS fluids are not regulated under U.S. EPA Title III Air Toxics and are not EPA Criteria Pollutants. 

Chemically, OXSOL 2000 is alpha, alpha, alpha-trifluorotoluene, an HFC. OXSOL 2000 has a number of desirable properties for precision cleaning, electronics cleaning, aerosol applications, and wipe cleaning. It is a pure compound, with a relatively fast evaporation rate and toluene-like odor. In its pure form, OXSOL 2000 is a good replacement for hexane, toluene, and VM P naphtha where a rapid evaporation rate is desirable and a flammable solvent can be used safely. In addition, OXSOL 2000 can be blended with classical solvents like trichloroethylene yielding non-flammable, very fast evaporating compositions.
