Reference citation numbers

Numbers in parentheses are reference citation numbers. Complete references are listed in numerical order at the end of each chapter in which they are cited. 

Use commas to separate two reference citation numbers, but use an en dash (-) to express a range of three or more in sequence, whether they are superscripts or are on the line in parentheses. When they are superscripts, do not use a space after the comma. 

Most of the selected papers contain reference citations to other Pauling papers, some selected for inclusion here and some not. To help the reader make use of these citations, a citation index of the selected papers is included as Appendix II. It enables any selected paper (represented by its SP number) to be found in the anthology from a reference to it in another paper. Its Herman-Munro publication number y-n is also given. 

A relatively new reference citation system has been employed which rapidly becomes familiar with use and then has distinct advantages over the more common superscript number method. In this system no reference numbers appear in the text, in tables, in footnotes or at the end of chapters. Instead, each time a reference is cited there appears in angle brackets a letter code assigned to the journal, preceded by the year (tens and units only except for non-twentieth century references) and followed by the page number. A list of the original figure or table numbers for each figure or table that you wish to reproduce from a given source, along with a complete reference citation for the source. 

The reference citation for a journal article should include the name(s) of the author(s) the name of the journal the month, day, and year of publication volume and issue numbers and inclusive page numbers for the article. 

Page numbers in reference citations are always printed solid p 11597. 

With numerical reference citations, start with 1 and number consecutively throughout the paper, including references in text and those in tables, figures, and other nontext components. If a reference is repeated, do not give it a new number use the original reference number. 

Pagination is an essential element of a reference citation. The complete page range is preferable, but initial page numbers are acceptable. 

You may also indicate pagination in reference citations by f or ff , which mean and following page or pages, respectively. The f or ff is set in roman type and is spaced from the preceding number ...

ACS will not reply to you via e-mail, but will reply via fax or regular mail if you do not have a fax number. 

To assist readers who may have one of the four editions of Heinrich s book, a listing is provided in the reference section, giving the citation number and page numbers on which the excerpt appears in the several editions. For references from publications by other authors, the author s name and the page number in the publication are given.

Now, go to Part C to look up the bibliographic citations for these eight different TPRC numbers. Through a process of elimination, you will determine that only reference TPRC number 39674 corresponds to the subject of interest and that the reference is by W. Reese. 

The classification of literature was carried out with the controlled key-word phrases denoting broader groupings of the host-species concerned such as hexa-host, Hofmann-type, quinol, urea adduct, Werner-type, etc. Crystal structure analysis, spectroscopic technique, and other physico-chemical methods applied were also included in the keyword phrases. In the original literature various terms have been used to express the group of inclusion complexes, and the selection appears to depend on the author s preference. Such confusion or controversy causes severe difficulties to retrieve important information from vast amount of chemical literatures. Therefore, we applied rather loosely controlled groupings as cited above. The citation number in the Chemical Abstracts (Chem. Abstr.) was added to ease the reference of the original items written in various unfamiliar languages. 

The rapid growth of the citation numbers in the field of inclusion chemistry is clearly seen in Fig. 1 in recent years. Since the total number of chemical references in each volume of Chem. Abstr. has not changed on the whole in these years, the trend of growth is not only absolute but also relative to other fields of chemistry. The trend is common to the categories we have tentatively assigned except that grouped under "CLATHRATE" with a wavy curve of small amplitude in Fig. 1. That grouped under "INCLUSION" shows six times increase from 1977 to...
