The language of chemistry is understood better when the symbols of the more common elements are known, such as those shown on the following page. Use of these symbols provides a convenient shorthand method for chemists to represent molecular formulae. In these formulae, the subscript number following the atomic symbol denotes how many atoms of that element are in the molecule, for example, the formula for water is H2O, which means each molecule of water contains two atoms of hydrogen (symbol H) and one atom of oxygen (symbol O). 

The structural units represent residues from the monomeric com-pound(s) employed in the preparation of the polymer. Usually, there is a direct correspondence between the monomer(s) and the structural unit(s). Several illustrative examples of units occurring in linear polymers are listed on the following page ... 

If the condensation proceeds far enough, a network structure is easily formed. Similarly, copolymerization of a little divinyl adipate with vinyl acetate yields a nonlinear polymer in which chains of bifunctional vinyl acetate units are bridged, or cross-linked, by the tetrofunctional divinyl adipate units, as indicated on the following page, where the divinyl adipate unit is enclosed between vertical dashed lines ... 

After the scope is approved by all concerned parties, any change is formally made on a paper entitled Change of Scope. These are distributed to all concerned parties, and are discussed at periodic meetings called to review the status of the project. The information that is necessary to define the scope is given in Table 3-1. The importance of these items will be discussed on the following pages. 

From Table 6 it can be seen how the selected parameters have a connection to the basic principles of inherent safety. For instance the subindices of equipment safety and safe process structure contain several characteristics of inherent safety such as limitation of effects or tolerance to maloperation. It is practical to include several characteristics into few parameters, since the inherent safety principles are both very broad and overlapping. The philosophy behind them cannot be described just by one process parameter. The selected parameters are discussed in more detail on the following pages. 

In the standard format used for each Chemical agent on the following pages, the following definitions apply. 

Below and on the following pages are tables that are typical of the type you might be asked to read in a textbook or on the job. Note their simplicity and economy.

Dr. Harold Abramson, under a contract with the CIA in 1954, had reached a similar conclusion from a preliminary trial with four subjects. Based on his clinical judgment of response intensity, he estimated the inhalation dose to be only about one-third as effective as the same oral dose. In 1966, he gave me a hand-typed draft CIA report he had never published. The ingenuity of the technique he describes, using a rudimentary aerosol chamber, is evident in the report, which is provided on the following pages. 

Note that there is more than one family on each plot. This is just one example devise your own system to suit your cropping needs using the advice on the following pages. 

The starches, the most important vegetable reserve carbohydrate and polysaccharides from plant cell walls, are discussed in greater detail on the following page. Inulin, a fructose polymer, is used as a starch substitute in diabetics dietary products (see p.l60). In addition, it serves as a test substance for measuring renal clearance (see p.322). 

The correlation tables on the following pages show how the main types of compounds are reduced to various products by different reducing agents. The tables list only the reactions contained in this book (with exceptional cases omitted). If a reagent for a certain conversion is not listed, that does not necessarily mean that it cannot accomplish a particular reduction. Reagents listed in parentheses apply only under special conditions or are used exceptionally. 

The RDA for adult males and adult females are included in each individual vitamin monograph. The table on the following page presents the listing of vitamin and mineral RDA values for all age groups as published in Recommended Dietary Allowances, 10th Edition, National Academy of Sciences, Washington, DC, 1989. 

In addition to the agents on the following pages, propanolol and timolol are indicated for migraine prophylaxis.

The answer key is followed by a section on how to score your exam. 

You will have five minutes to study the diagram on the following page, after which you must turn the page and answer questions 1-7 from memory. You will NOT be permitted to look back at the diagram to answer the questions.
