Temper. The system for designating material condition, whether the product form is strip, rod, or wine, is defined in ASTM Recommended Practice B601 (1). The ASTM system uses an alpha-numeric code for each of the standard temper designations. This system replaces the historical terminology of half hard, hard, spring, etc. Table 3 summarizes temper designations. 

Magnetic Particle Examination. All accessible surfaces of the main load carrying components of the equipment shall be examined by a magnetic particle examination method or technique conforming to the requirements of ASTM E709 Recommended Practice for Magnetic Particle Examination. Acceptance limits shall be as agreed upon by the manufacturer and the purchaser. 

Conduct in-house inhibitor tests to determine which inhibitor and at what concentration to use. The tests must be conducted following the recommended practices of NACE or ASTM. ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and NACE (National Association of Corrosion Engineers) publish standards for such tests.

When considering the use of retarding admixtures in situations where the temperature exceeds 30°C, the relevance of the ASTM C 494 compliance test data (done under laboratory conditions) to the field conditions the concrete will experience must be considered. The actual temperatures experienced in most hot-weather countries (> 40°C) go beyond the scope of many current recommended practices. For example the ACI guide to hot-weather concreting (ACI 305 R-89) does not meet the needs of, and is not practical...

ASTM D 1144 provides a recommended practice for determining the rate of bond strength development for either tensile or lap shear specimens. However, peel and can-teliever tests can also be used effectively. Measured bond strength values of partially cured test specimens are compared with those of a reference (i.e., fully cured adhesive joint) to assess the extent of cure. This method may suit some applications, but it is limited in accuracy because it does not directly measure the degree of cure in the adhesive, and the effect on the joint design and substrates may override the effect of cure development. 

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) provides standards, compatibility testing, and tests for mechanical properties, recommended practices and procedures as well as codes for polymeric materials. The various industry codes and standards are summarized in Table 4.95. 

In addition to testing methods and product specifications, ASTM Committee D-20 on Plastics has also prepared definitions of terms and recommended practices for molding test specimens and constructing testing equipment, conditioning and weathering procedures, and related standards. These are published in the ASTM books of standards (4-7). There is also a federal standard for laboratory atmospheric conditions for testing (34). 

One of he Aspergillus fungi, Aspergillus niger, is recommended by ASTM G 21 Standard practice for the determining resistance of synthetic polymeric materials to fungi for the determination of the effect of fungi on the properties of synthetic polymeric matmals. 

In the cement concrete industry the recommended practice is to consolidate low slump mixes by vibration and high slump mixes with hand tools. For example, ASTM Method C 192 (6) specifies consolidating test specimens by vibration if the slump is less than 1 in. Relationships between workability and ease of placing sand-asphalt-sulfur mixes are being evaluated on various field projects to assess the workability requirements for mix placement with various types of equipment.
