The development, validation, and application of TEFs have been reviewed regularly since 1984 by Safe [25,36,37]. The limitations of this approach have been identified [38]. To assess the relative potencies and to derive consensus on TEFs for PCDDs, PCDFs, and dioxin-like PCBs, the WHO-European Centre for Environmental and Health (WHO-ECEH) and the International Program on Chemical Safety (IPCS) have initiated a project and published their interim report [39]. The most important limitations, namely possible synergism or antagonism among dioxins and its stereo isomers and the lack of pharmacokinetic consideration, have been addressed in this report. USEPA researchers [40] showed that the relative potency of PCBs, PCDFs, and 2,3,7,8-TCDD is tissue specific and thus estimates of TEFs based on hepatic EROD activity is limited. Additionally, limitations of TEFs based on mammalian models to aquatic species have been demonstrated [41]. The international initiative on TEFs has recognized these pitfalls and recommended development of TEFs for fish and other wildlife. [Pg.133]

Nomenclature in TA continues to be a controversial issue. The International Confederation of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (ICTAC) has essentially overseen developments in this domain over some four decades. However, practical nomenclature is determined by general acceptance, and a variety of factors affect this. The nomenclature recommendations released by Hemminger and Sarge in 2001, subsequent to widespread and intensive discussion with thermal analysts worldwide, have yet to be formally accepted by ICTAC. Likewise, modifications to the Recommendations for Reporting Thermal Analysis Data - as reported in the late 1960s and early 1970s - have yet to be approved by ICTAC. In short, developments on these issues have been severely curtailed by a lack of international agreement on the core principles. [Pg.4755]

In the late 1980s attempts were made in California to shift fuel use to methanol in order to capture the air quaHty benefits of the reduced photochemical reactivity of the emissions from methanol-fueled vehicles. Proposed legislation would mandate that some fraction of the sales of each vehicle manufacturer be capable of using methanol, and that fuel suppHers ensure that methanol was used in these vehicles. The legislation became a study of the California Advisory Board on Air QuaHty and Fuels. The report of the study recommended a broader approach to fuel quaHty and fuel choice that would define environmental objectives and allow the marketplace to determine which vehicle and fuel technologies were adequate to meet environmental objectives at lowest cost and maximum value to consumers. The report directed the California ARB to develop a regulatory approach that would preserve environmental objectives by using emissions standards that reflected the best potential of the cleanest fuels. [Pg.434]

Initially, there was some ovedap on proposed analytical methods to accomplish a particular analysis. The Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) methods and Bacteriological Analytical Manual (BAM) methods in some cases dupHcated ASTA methods, but the procedures differed. Most spice companies, particulady those who are members of ASTA, use ASTA recommended methods. In an attempt to ensure that equivalent specifications are reported, the Technical Group of ASTA develops specifications and in some cases recommends that a BAM or AO AC method be used. [Pg.27]

The success of quinine inspired the search for other antimalarials. The greatest impetus for the development of synthetic dmgs came this century when the two World Wars intermpted the supply of cinchona bark to the combatants. A stmcturally related 4-quinolinemethanol is mefloquine (65, Lariam [51773-92-3]) which now serves as an effective alternative agent for chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum. This is a potent substance that requires less than one-tenth the dose of quinine to effect cures. There are some untoward side effects associated with this dmg such as gastrointestinal upset and dizziness, but they tend to be transient. Mefloquine is not recommended for use by those using beta-blockers, those whose job requires fine coordination and spatial discrimination, or those with a history of epilepsy or psychiatric disorders. A combination of mefloquine with Fansidar (a mixture of pyrimethamine and sulfadoxine) is known as Fansimef but its use is not recommended. Resistance to mefloquine has been reported even though the compound has not been in wide use. [Pg.273]

The nomenclature of boron hydride derivatives has been somewhat confusing and many inconsistencies exist in the Hterature. The stmctures of some reported boron hydride clusters are so compHcated that only a stmctural drawing or graph, often accompanied by explanatory text, is used to describe them. Traditional nomenclature systems often can be used to describe compounds unambiguously, but the resulting descriptions may be so long and unwieldy that they are of Htde use. The lUPAC (7) and the Chemical Abstract Service (8) have made recommendations, and nomenclature methods have now been developed that can adequately handle nearly all clusters compounds however, these methods have yet to be widely adopted. Eor the most part, nomenclature used in the original Hterature is retained herein. [Pg.227]
