Also termed sulphur chloride factice or cold factice. That type of factice prepared by treating unsaturated oils, such as rape oil or castor oil, with sulphur monochloride. Since the reaction is exothermic care must be taken to keep the temperature as low as possible. See Factice. White Metal... [Pg.72]

Wakbukton s method of effecting the purification of rape oil is by treatment with caustic alkali, ia which, the albuminous and other impurities are soluble, and are. separated, associated with soapy matters. In a suitable vessel, containing fifty-two parts of. caustic soda solution, of specific gravity 1-010, are to be put one hundred pounds of the refined oil those are to be stirred with a wooden ladle till well mixed. The mixture is then allowed to stand twenty-four hours undisturbed, in a cold place, after which it is then slowly warmed, and again well stirred. After twenty-four hours subsidence all the oil will have separated if such should not bo entirely the case, the complete separation may be effected by the addition of a small quantity of spirit of wine. The oil drawn off from the liquor is afterwards well washed with hot water, till the pure oil is obtained without taste or color, and if desired, may be passed through a filter. The soap which deposits may be used as an ordinary detergent... [Pg.616]

Rapeseed/Canola belongs to the turnip rutabaga, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and mustard family of crops that can be grown at low temperatures and moderate humidity. Three species have been grown as oilseeds Brassica napus, known in Europe as rape, oil rape, Swede rape, and Argentine rape B. campestris, known as rapeseed, oil turnip, turnip rape, and Polish rape and B. juncea, known as leaf mustard, brown mustard, Oriental mustard, and Indian mustard. B. campestris was grown in India as early as 2000-1500 BC. [Pg.1627]

Other Whole Oilseeds. Various oilseeds have been fed whole, or dehulled, when available for feed at competitive prices or in grades substandard for extraction but still wholesome for feeding. Examples include safflower (Carthamus tinctorius), fat content 35%, dmb and oil-type sunflower seed fat content 44%, dmb. Currently, interest is high in feeding whole canola seed (41 6% oil) in Canada and northern European countries. Double-zero strains of Brassica napus (rapeseed, oilseed rape, swede rape, and Argentine rape) and Brassica campestris (turnip rape, oil... [Pg.2308]

Viscosity.—The viscosity of a melted fat or an oil may be defined as the friction which the particles exert upon each other in moving. It is usually determined by observing the flow of the oil through a capillary tube. The specific viscosity of an oil is the rate of flow compared with water, but in practice the viscosity is usually compared with that of some oil which has been taken as a standard. The oil commonly used as such a standard is rape oil. In this case the viscosity of the rape oil is considered as lOO. [Pg.212]

Manufacture. Rape oil, resin, pine root or pine wood is burnt in an oven and the generated soot, which is caught on the wall of the oven, is subsequently collected. It is said that the quality varies with the place v/here the soot is caught. [Pg.121]

Manufacture. (1) Stamp process. Aluminium foil scrap is put into an iron mortar with rape oil, beef tallow or olive oil etc, crushed by a hammer which moves up and down and then it is sieved. Tlie contents of the mortar are then transferred to a cylindrical drum, to which some lubricant like stearic acid is added, and the drum is then revolved for glazing to take place. (2) Ball mill process. Aluminium scrap or foil is charged into a ball mill with some lubricant or benzine, and crushed. In some cases an inert gas is introduced into the mill in place of benzine. (3) Atomizing process. Melted aluminium is scattered by spraying molten metal in a jet of air to produce fine particles. [Pg.122]
