Calumba root

Z-canadine (XXVI) there is simultaneously produced d-corypalmine, m.p. 234-5°. Similarly in the preparation of 1-tetrahydrocolumbamine from Z-canadine, Z-corypalmine, m.p. 235-7°, is also obtained. dZ-Cory-palmine obtained by crystallising an equimolecular mixture of the two forms, has m.p. 215-7°, alone or mixed with dZ-tetrahydrojatrorrhizine from calumba roots. Though d-corypalmine was the form first described the Z- and dZ- forms also occur naturally (see items quoted above). These facts establish formula (XXV =. OH Ri = R = = OMe) for...

In constipation, action similar to Senna, and sometimes preferred to the latter rarely gripes. Occasionally prescribed with diuretics, etc., for gravel and dropsy. Combined with tonics and stomachics such as Gentian and Calumba root, makes a first-rate family medicine. Dose, wineglass of the ounce to pint infusion. 

Berberine has been found in many plants. The largest quantities are found in Calumba roots Cocculm palmatus) [19], and in the roots of Berberis vulgaris, Linn. [20]. The latter is the only one of importance in dyeing. 

CALUMBA ROOT, Calumbae radix Other antipropulsive drugs include Ca-lumba root which is the root of Jatrorrhiza palmata, Miers, family Menispermaceae, a wild-growing liana in East Africa. It contains the alkaloids jatrorrhizine and palmatine with effects on smooth muscles like morphine. 

Infusion of Calumba. Calumba root, 1 drachm boiling water, i pint. Macerate for 4 hours and strain, adding afterwards ounce of spirit of cinnamon. The dose is... 

Tonic Aromatic Mixture. Digest in a close vessel for 3 days, agitating frequently, 1 ounce powdered pale cinchona baric, 3 drachms powdered calumba root, 2 drachms bruised cloves, and 4 ounce iron ings in 16 fluid ounces peppermint water strain, and add 3 fluid ounces compound tincture of cardamoms, and 3 fluid drachms tincture of orange peel. Dose. 1 or 2 table-spoonfuls or more, 3 or 4 times a day.

Columbamine. (Items 1, 6, 9, 11, 18, 22 list, p. 328.) This base probably occurs among the phenolic alkaloids of calumba root, but it has only been isolated in the form of dl-tetmhydrocolutnbamine, Ci,H] gN(OH)(OMe)g, m.p. 223-4° (p. 291), which on methylation furnishes d tetrahydropalmatine.
