Plasticizers. About 2.5% of U.S. adipic acid consumed in 1988 was used in two basic types of adipic ester based plasticizers (195). Simple adipate esters prepared from Cg—alcohols are used especially as PVC plasticizers (qv). Eor special appHcations requiring low volatility or extraction resistance, polyester derivatives of diols or polyols are preferred. [Pg.247]

Commodity Phthalate Esters. The family of phthalate esters are by far the most abundandy produced woddwide. Both orthophthaUc and terephthahc acid and anhydrides are manufactured. The plasticizer esters are produced from these materials by reaction with an appropriate alcohol (eq. 1) terephthalate esterification for plasticizers is performed more abundandy in the United States. Phthalate esters are manufactured from methanol (C ) up to Qyj alcohols, although phthalate use as PVC plasticizers is generally in the range to The lower molecular weight phthalates find use in nitrocellulose the higher phthalates as synthetic lubricants for the automotive industries. [Pg.122]

Interaction Parameters. Early attempts to describe PVC—plasticizer compatibiHty were based on the same principles as used to describe solvation, ie, like dissolves like (2). To obtain a quantitative measure of PVC—plasticizer compatibihty a number of different parameters have been used. More recently these methods have been assessed and extended by many workers (7—9). In all cases it is not possible to adequately predict the behavior of polymeric plasticizers. [Pg.124]

About one million tons of plasticizers aie used annually in Western Europe. Some 92% of this total is used to plasticize poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and about 95% of these PVC plasticizers are phthalate esters. In spite of the fact that there are several hundred plasticizers in commercial use in the world, only relatively few (ie, phthalates) are used in amounts that make them significant in toimage terms, and hence in their likely environmental input and impact. [Pg.131]

TrimeUitic anhydride is converted to PVC plasticizers, polyesters, water-soluble alkyd coatings, and polyamide—imide resias. The trimellitate plasticizers have a lower volatility than those derived from phthaUc anhydride (see Plasticizers). [Pg.510]

Other uses of HCI are legion and range from the purification of fine silica for the ceramics industry, and the refining of oils, fats and waxes, to the manufacture of chloroprene mbbers, PVC plastics, industrial solvents and organic intermediates, the production of viscose rayon yam and staple fibre, and the wet processing of textiles (where hydrochloric acid is used as a sour to neutralize residual alkali and remove metallic and other impurities). [Pg.812]

In the field of plastics, the annual production of polyvinylchloride (PVC) is second only to polyethylene. PVC has long been used in various areas, ranging from agriculture and industry to medical equipment and daily life, due to its well-developed production techniques, easy processing, and low price. However, PVC has its own disadvantages, mainly its low stability toward heat and ultraviolet (UV) light. Also, pure PVC is a very hard material that cannot be easily processed and practically used. Common PVC plastics contain various amounts of plasticizers and other additives, including modifiers, stabilizers, and lubricants. [Pg.137]

The quality control of PVC, plasticizers, and additives must be done according to certain standards. In the case of making the blending material for medical uses, medical grade PVC, which contains <3 ppm vinylchloride monomers, should be used. [Pg.141]

Since it possesses good properties of both PVC plastics and polyurethane elastomers, it has been used in those areas where PVC and polyurethane have traditionally played dominant roles. For example, it is a very promising replacement for flexible PVC used for medical purposes and in the food industry [I6,l7], because it essentially eliminates the concern regarding plasticizer contamination. It has been used in combination with the copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile (NBR) to make the abrasion-resistant aprons and rolls used on textile machines [18]. A PVC/TPU/ABS blend serves as a substitute for leather [19]. This could have a tremendous impact on the shoe industry. It has also been found to have an application as a building coating [20,21]. This trend will certainly grow and more applications will be found. This in turn should bring new developments in the material itself. [Pg.144]

Electric road vehicles have been reduced to insignificance, as mentioned already by, vehicles with combustion engines. Another electric vehicle — the electrically driven submarine — presented a continuous challenge to lead-acid battery separator development since the 1930s and 1940s. The wood veneers originally used in electric vehicles proved too difficult to handle, especially if tall cells had to be manufactured. Therefore much intense effort took place to develop the first plastic separators. In this respect the microporous hard rubber separator, still available today in a more advanced version, and a micro-porous PVC separator (Porvic I) merit special mention 28]. For the latter a molten blend of PVC, plasticizer and starch was rolled into a flat product. In a lengthy pro-... [Pg.256]

Similar results were also reported in [100], As noted earlier, the authors measured the strength of the filler-matrix interaction by the magnitude of the thermal effect the more negative the enthalpy, the greater the interaction. The results are presented in Table 8 below. [Pg.35]

Organotin compounds are important industrial chemicals. One major use is as stabilizers for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) plastics. These additives, one example of which is dioctyltinmaleate, inhibit degradation of the polymer by heat, light, and oxygen. In the absence of these tin compounds, PVC yellows and becomes brittle. [Pg.1511]

Only recently, we have shown experimentally for a selection of neutral ionophores and carefully purified, typical PVC plasticizers that in absence of ionic sites Nernstian EMF responses could not be obtained [55]. For plasticizers of low polarity no EMF responses were observed at all. Transient responses due to salt extraction even with the highly hydrophilic counterion chloride were observed in the case of the more polar nitrobenzene. Lasting primary ion-dependent charge separation at the liquid liquid interfaces of ISEs, resulting in a stable EMF response, seemed therefore only possible in the presence of ionic sites confined to the membrane phase. Because membranes free of impurity sites... [Pg.461]
