In 2002, the European Exposure Factors (ExpoFacts) database started as a 2-year project funded by CEFIC-LRI (European Chemical Industry Council, Long Range Research Initiative) to create a European database of factors affecting exposure to environmental contaminants. The aim was to create a public access data source, similar to the US-EPA Exposure Factors Handbook (US-EPA 1997), which has been widely used by European researchers, but with European data. Since 2006, the project is hosted by the European Commission s Joint Research Centre (JRC 2007).

GMP Flexible Packaging Europe www.fpe.org another paper on GMP has been recently prepared by the European Plastics Converters Association, Flexible Packaging Europe, Plastics Europe and CEFIC-Food Contact Additives panel and forwarded to the European Commission for comments before being made public. 

In 1993, the CEFIC published the first issue of Guidelines on Environmental Reporting for the European Chemical Industries in order to promote the publication of annual environmental reports by its members. The guidehnes were well received and a number of member companies proceeded to publish environmental reports, albeit at different levels - local, national, European and international. 

The LRI is funded jointly by the CEFIC, the CMA and the JCIA over a five-year period in order to regain public trust, enhance reputation and defend its business from a position of strength . They also define the objectives as being to ... 

This research project titled, A Review of Worlq)lace Management Strategies for Chemicals in Small Enterprises is funded by the CEFIC Long Range Research Initiative (LRI). It will be con leted by mid-2006 and will be the subject of further publications. 

In the HERA project, a European voluntary initiative commissioned by A.I.S.E. (representing the formulators and manufacturers of household and industrial and institutional cleaning products) and CEFIC " (representing the suppliers and manufacturers of the raw materials), the most important ingredients of laundry detergents are subject to a systematic risk assessment. This covers product safety from an ecological and human health perspective. The underlying reports are available to the public via the HERA website. 

Patterns of distribution and customer identification are difficult to obtain from public information. The information used in this chapter comes primarily from the Cefic European Chemical Industry Council and ACC reports. As mentioned earlier, in terms of regional sales of chemicals (Figure 1-1), Asia (other than Japan) accounts for the largest share 30.4 percent of 1.82 trillion total world chemical sales in 2007. 

In order to provide competent assistance, responders in the national ICE center or in a company must meet a number of minimum requirements, either through training or experience. These requirements have been agreed upon within the chemical industry and are outlined in a CEFIC publication entitled Distribution Emergency Response—Guidelines for Use by the Chemical Industry, published in 1993. 

CEFIC An abbreviation for Conseil European des Federations de I lndustrie Chimique, it is an organization based in Brussels representing around 30,000 chemical companies, which account for about one-fifth of the world s chemical production. Founded in 1959, it comprises corporate, national federation, and business members and has responsibility tor logistics, policy, international legislation, research and irmovation, and means of public communication on chemical substances and their production. CEFIC is a member of the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA). 

The relative toxicological characteristics of plasticizers have been studied for over 30 years in both the United States and Europe. Initially, the focus was on DOP (DEHP) and DOA (DEHA) because of their historical wide usage in many applications, including flexible PVC food films and medical devices, but this has expanded to several other phthalates. In recent years, a substantial database in this area has been developed for a variety of phthalates. A European trade association, the European Chemical Industry Federation (CEFIC), has summarized the known information, including numerous independent reviews, translating the impact of plasticizers on public health and the environment." Overall, these reviews have found phthalates safe for use as intended.
