Sediment. The sediment test consists of filtering a definite quantity of milk through a white cotton sediment test disk and observing the character and amount of residue. Efficient use of single-service strainers on dairy farms has reduced the use of sediment tests on milk as deflvered to receiving plants. Although the presence of sediment in milk indicates unsanitary production or handling, its absence does not prove that sanitary conditions always existed. 

Plastics are extensively used in medicine to package drugs, ointments, and accessories. Plastics serve to protect medicines, surgical/ clinical equipment, medical materials, etc. from contamination and breakage in many ways, from single-service squeeze packs of cough syrup to carrying cases used to ship human eyes between hospital eye banks. 

Adequate washing facilities shall be provided, including hot and cold water, soap or detergent, air driers or single-service towels, and clean toilet facilities easily accesible to working areas. 

It may be estimated conservatively that less than 10% of the food we eat is contaminated with harmful spray residues. These observations, correlated with the relatively low amounts of various pesticide residues found on food crops and the immeasurable trace that may be on a single service of the food, emphasize the little danger to health from spray residues. 

The wide publicity given DDT and the many new pesticides that have been developed during the past few years has made the public aware of the widespread use of spray chemicals. Many misstatements about the poisonous properties of these new products have caused abnormal concern and fear over the possible presence of excessive amounts of spray residues on food crops. This concern is a natural one, because the public does not realize the very small amount of the insecticidal residue that may remain on a single service of food, which usually does not exceed 0.25 pound in weight. Nor does the public realize that only a relatively small percentage of the food we eat has ever been treated with a spray or dust of a specific pesticide. 

The ideal (bio)chemical sensor should operate reversibly and respond like a physical sensor (e.g. a thermometer), i.e. it should be responsive to both high and low analyte concentrations and provide a nil response in its absence. One typical example is the pH electrode. In short, a reversible (bio)chemical sensor provides a response consistent with the actual variation in the analyte concentration in the sample and is not limited by any change or disruption in practical terms, responsiveness is inherent in reversibility. An irreversible-non-regenerable (bio)chemical sensor only responds to increases in the analyte concentration and can readily become saturated only those (bio)chemical sensors of this type intended for a single service (disposable or single-use sensors) are of practical interest. On the other hand, an irreversible-reusable sensor produces a response similar to that from an irreversible sensor but does not work in a continuous fashion as it requires two steps (measurement and renewal) to be rendered reusable. In certain fairly rare circumstances a sufficient number of materials are tested in a single service application to allow a direct in-service comparison to be carried out although a comparison with the laboratory data requires considerable estimation. Nevertheless this can be a useful exercise.
