Cleaning wastes

Particle size distribution relating to gas cleaning is well understood in the industry. This section deals with general rules of thumb. Certain important issues not included in this section are flue gas desulfurization, flue gas denitrification, hazardous waste gas cleaning, waste incineration gas cleaning, and removal of CO2 from flue gas. All these topics have special requirements, which must be considered separately in the design process.

Metal cleaning wastes result from cleaning compounds, rinse waters, or any other waterborne residues derived from cleaning any metal process equipment, including, but not limited to, boiler tube cleaning, boiler fireside cleaning, and air preheater cleaning. 

Metal cleaning wastes include wastewater from chemical cleaning of boiler tubes, air preheater washwater, and boiler fireside washwater.

In controlled environments, the cleaners can be used to reduce and/or clean waste generated by industry. 

The cleaning waste that cannot be eliminated through substitution or more efficient use should be considered for recycling or reuse. The segregation of different types of cleaning waste may be required for such recycling or reuse. Specific examples of recycling and reuse are discussed for specific media in later sections. 

Viable alternatives to cartridge filters include bag filters and metal mesh filters. Metal mesh filters are available in very fine micron sizes and they can be cleaned and reused. Since it is very important to minimize all wastes, the issue of mesh filter cleaning waste reuse or recycling would need to be addressed before switching to these filters. 

Paint application equipment - spray guns, hoses, as well as brushes and rollers is often cleaned with solvents. Cleaning wastes can sometimes be recycled in ways such as (Lorton 1988) ...

Recommendation 2-5. The Army should determine whether adequate data are available from JACADS to support the efficacy of processing secondary wastes in the metal parts furnace. In the particular case of transparent and sufficiently clean wastes, the production of polyolefin wax can be considered as described above. Such products have a higher commercial value than that of the new plastic material itself.
