Medium coverage

The public s idea of what is most risky usually differs widely from the facts. Much of this stems from disproportionate media coverage of newsworthy hazards that are rare or unusual. This distorts many people s perspective on the relative magnitude of risks. Thus, some parents may not have their children vaccinated, fearing a rare reaction to the vaccine more than the overwhelmingly greater risk of dying from the disease. [Pg.57]

Pollution control and waste disposal are now under strict regulation at federal, state, and local levels. Enforcement of these regulations has also become more effective. Increased public awareness and media coverage make it difficult for today s polluter to hide behind a screen of ignorance. [Pg.55]

When thinking about economics, we need to make the distinction between the topic and the discipline. There is an inherent familiarity about economics that follows from regular exposure to the topic through everyday transactions—purchases of goods and services—and through the media coverage of (for example) poverty, unemployment, government expenditure and taxation plans, and markets. [Pg.2]

Loss of belief in science is the result of media reports of contradictory research by scientists on a wide range of (mainly health) issues and a belief that science was often used for questionable ends (cloning, developing drugs for profit, and others). Trust in medicine is diminishing following media coverage of mistakes and bad practice by doctors. These concerns influence perceptions of food and food safety if scientists and medical researchers cannot all be trusted, this undermines the information and opinions they provide about food. [Pg.113]

Furthermore, there is a recognized association between the number of complaints received by the FDA and the length of time a product has been on the market. There is likely to be a large number of complaints immediately after a new food additive is introduced into the marketplace because of extensive media coverage and heightened awareness of potential risks. The number of... [Pg.149]

More recently, 1C has become much popular not only for clinical studies, but also for daily medical practice, and patients are now much more accustomed to give their consent. Clinical studies become more visible to general public and the media reports studies with potential therapeutic benefit in a favourable manner. This is a significant change from the past when most media coverage of clinical studies were... [Pg.648]

A worldwide network dedicated to drug policy reform. We inform public opinion and promote balanced media coverage. [Pg.516]

The utter destruction of the Haight-Ashbury, which has now become that terminal sewer that seems to lurk at the end of every American social experiment, as a result of its enormous media coverage and consequent commercialization, somewhat dampens this optimism, although there is every indication that the original spirit has been rapidly transplanted throughout this country and Europe. [Pg.448]

Extensive media coverage in the 1990s made the public aware of Prozac and greatly increased the demand for the drug. Some people got the impression that it had no side effects, helped in weight loss, and was a sort of happy pill that everyone should take. But neither this nor the other SSRI drugs improve mood or make healthy people high or happier if they are not clinically (observed symptoms) depressed. [Pg.53]

However, if a chemical plant has a small fire or a small release that slightly injures or hospitalizes two or three individuals, intense media coverage usually follows. A television reporter will often arrive just outside the front gate and broadcast with the company logo in the background. In the case of the print media, it will be a front-page story. [Pg.15]

Several award-winning authors publish only one book per year, but due to the ongoing media coverage. [Pg.7]

The incident caused a flood of media coverage and a criminal investigation followed with the help of the local and Dutch Health Inspectorate. Thereafter, the prosecutor dismissed the case and held that the intoxication was caused by... [Pg.15]

In 2005, a study appeared in Cancer Letters that would have evoked widespread media coverage if it had been about an illegal drug, rather than about a pharmaceutical company product (El-Zein, 2005). Researchers from the University of Texas examined 12 children treated with therapeutic effects of Ritalin to determine whether this central nervous system stimulant produces cytogenetic abnormalities in pediatric patients at therapeutic doses. Using peripheral blood lymphocytes taken from the children, they found a 2.4-fold increase in chromosome aberrations and similar defects. They concluded, These findings warrant further investigations of the possible health effects of methylphenidate in humans, especially in view of the well-documented relationship between elevated frequencies of chromosome aberrations and increased cancer risk. ... [Pg.313]

There is little data available to profile the organic industry in Australia and anecdotal evidence is used to extrapolate from the most recent survey by Hassell Associates 1996 who reported total sales of A 80.5m. (see Table 13.3.) The two largest wholesale outlets for organic fresh fruit and vegetables in Melbourne and Sydney have reported consistent growth over the past 5 years of 25% per annum. The same Melbourne wholesaler recently reported 60% growth in the last 6 months, due most likely to increased media coverage... [Pg.197]
