Properties of Jute

Like all the lignocellulosic fibers, the physical and chemical properties of jute fiber is also dependent on the three chemical components, viz., cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The chemical composition and structural parameters of jute fibers are represented in Table 20.3. [Pg.458]

The lignocellulosic fibers reveal substantial deviation in diameter along with the length of individual fibers. The qualities and properties of lignocellulosic fibers are generally dependent on features like size, maturity, as well as processing methods implemented for the extraction of fibers. The modulus of the fiber reduces with proliferation in diameter. [Pg.458]

Tests by Roe et al. [63] with unidirectional jute fiber-reinforced UP resins show a linear relationship (analogous to the linear mixing rule) between the volume content of fiber and Young s modulus and tensile strength of the composite over a range of fiber content of 0-60%. Similar results are attained for the work of fracture and for the interlaminate shear strength (Fig. 20). Chawla et al. [64] found similar results for the flexural properties of jute fiber-UP composites. [Pg.805]

Banbaji [57] has examined the tensile properties of jute fibers before and after alkali treatment and has shown that the tenacity decreases with increasing concentration an initial value of 3.6 g/den falling to 2.5 g/den at 9% alkali and to 1.5 g/den at 24% alkali, at 2°C and 1-h immersion. The extension at break, referred to the fiber length before immersion, increased from 1.2% without alkali treatment to 3.6% at 9% alkali and then fell slightly to 2.4% at 24% alkali. [Pg.433]

O Dell [84] studied the weathering properties of jute fiber/unsaturated polyester composites and compared them with glass fiber/unsaturated polyester composites. Samples were exposed to cycles of continuous UV exposure for 102 min, followed by 18 min of water spray for a total of 1200 hours. It was noted that there were no observable visual differences between weathered glass and jute fiber specimens in color changes or surface erosion effects. [Pg.360]

All natural fibers are hydrophihc and their moisture content ranges from 3 to 13%. This leads to a very poor interface between natural fiber and the hydrophobic matrix and very poor moisture resistance. Several fiber surface treatments are used to improve the interface viz-thermal treatment, chemical treatment, and use of coupling agents (Bledzki and Gassan, 1999). Fillers are added to composites for technical and chemical reasons (Milewski and Katz, 1980). Calcium carbonate has maximum usage as filler in plastics and FRP due to its low cost, non-toxicity and lack of odor. Present work gives effectiveness of jute fabric treatment and addition of filler on properties of jute reinforced polyester composites (JFRP). [Pg.125]

Other properties of jute fibre started to be noticed in the middle of the last century. The jute fibre and its subsequent processing might find application in new areas of use and also newer products. [Pg.61]
