The light scatter assay may be used to determine absolute numbers of viable cells if flow cytometry data from cell suspensions of known concentration are used to construct a standard curve. For that purpose, cell concentrations should be determined in a series of graded, standard cell suspensions with the use of a Coulter counter. A plot of those standard concentrations versus the number of events (Hght scatter signals) acquired during a specified acquisition interval in the flow cytometer may then be used to interpolate cell concentrations for test samples that have been assayed by the light scatter procedure. 

When they enter science or engineering programs in college or graduate school, women and members of minority groups have had little experience with the norms and attitudes they encounter such as, for example, unnecessarily harsh grading standards or being told point-blank that they cannot succeed in those fields. 

Current NMFS seafood safety research, both inhouse and through contract studies addresses concerns such as heavy metals, pesticides, petrochemicals, other industrial chemicals, marine biotoxins, and pathogenic organisms. The issue of appearance as it relates to the cosmetic perfection demanded by consumers and supermarkets alike is a fundamental point. It is obvious that even organic customers will buy on appearance. Misshapen, blemished and deteriorating fruit and vegetables represent less value for money and more preparation time. It must also be remembered that the Grading Standards for Fresh Fruit and Vegetables mandate the need for a minimum Class II attainment for most (but not all) types of fresh produce. However, many consumers of organic fruit and vegetables are equally interested in taste and flavour. 

Liquid caustic soda, 50% and 73% solutions, is available in the following regular grades standard, low-iron, rayon and mercury-cell. The rayon and mercury-cell grades contain lower percentages of sodium chloride than do the standard and low-iron grades. 

To facilitate soybean marketing, the U.S. Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS) established grading standards for soybeans (Table 9) (123), and the FGIS website (124) provides much more detailed information than can be provided here (124).
