The literature survey is a review of the important information available which is relevant to the particular project topic. It may include information available in books, encyclopedias, lecture notes, journal articles, reports (both government and company), doctoral theses, standards, patents, and personal communications. It is important to identify and include relevant information only, and to state at the start of the survey what kind of information is required. 

The literature survey must include an introductory statement making clear what kind of information is required for the particular project. 

Students at Curtin University are provided with a set of guidelines for the design project, including requirements for the oral presentations, and a booklet Presentation of Literature Surveys. Interested parties can obtain copies of this material directly from Dr. Martyn Ray at Curtin University. 

A survey of the literature will often reveal general information and specific data pertinent to the development of a design project. One good method for starting a literature survey is to obtain a recent publication dealing with the subject under investigation. This publication will give additional references, and each of these references will, in turn, indicate other sources of information. This approach permits a rapid survey of the important literature. 

The first section in the body of the report is the introduction. It states the purpose and scope of the report and indicates why the design project originally appeared to be feasible or necessary. The relationship of the information presented in the report to other phases of the company s operations can be covered, and the effects of future developments may be worthy of mention. References to previous work can be discussed in the introduction, or a separate section can be presented dealing with literature-survey results and other previous work. 

The project was started in 1989 by a literature survey [156] and continued in 1990 by an interlaboratory study it was coordinated by the Universidad de Oviedo, Departamento de Quimica Fisica y Analitica (Spain). The Universidad de Cordoba, Departamento de Quimica Analitica (Spain) and the University of Plymouth, Department of Environmental Sciences (United Kingdom) participated in the intercomparison.

The simplified process flow chart shown in Fig. 1 depicts the stepwise approach followed in practicing the proposed literature survey-based project activity. Even though the activity seems to be a sequential process, students can always go back and rework to correct the methods adopted previously before moving to the next... 

Also the performance of previous batch of students undergoing theory and laboratory courses without any additional activity is compared with that of the current batch of students undergoing the courses along with literature survey-based project activity and data are shown in Table 2. It was noted here also that there was an improvement in class average and individual performance for the batch with project activity as compared with previous batch. Thus all teams could get information about the practical models covering all topics of the theory syllabus through demos and presentations of peer teams in order to establish the link between theory and practical effectively [1, 7, 9]. The literature describes numerous projects concerning the developing of difunctional products into materials which have interesting physical and mechanical properties. Such surveys were mainly performed in the seventies for applications in space. The research is briefly described here.
