Unfortunately, much of Fiesselmann s work was documented only in patents and doctoral theses, allowing for the rediscovery of this classic reaction in recent years. In fact, as late as 1997, the Fiesselmann reaction of 5 with methylthioglycolate was rediscovered as a novel, tandem Michael addition/intramolecular Knoevenagel approach to thiophenes such as 6 ... 

It should be noted here that expanded porphyrins, namely [22]porphyrin(4.0.4.0) and (22]porphyrin(6.0.6.0), have been prepared in Vogel s laboratory.1 1 The work on these porphyrins was only briefly reviewed in ref 1 e based on information from doctoral theses. Neither communications nor a full publication has appeared on this topic so the work is not reviewed here.

In this area as in others, the doctoral theses presented are, for their quantity and quality alike, the main vector for the creation and transmission of knowledge. 

Loss of belief in science is the result of media reports of contradictory research by scientists on a wide range of (mainly health) issues and a belief that science was often used for questionable ends (cloning, developing drugs for profit, and others). Trust in medicine is diminishing following media coverage of mistakes and bad practice by doctors. These concerns influence perceptions of food and food safety if scientists and medical researchers cannot all be trusted, this undermines the information and opinions they provide about food. 

During his short, but fruitful, academic career, from 1939 to 1975, Emil Hardegger published 123 papers and supervised 46 Doctoral dissertations. The results of some of his later students work were never published, due to the decline of his health, and therefore the titles, authors, and year of doctoral theses he supervised are given in Appendix II.

It may include information available in books, encyclopedias, lecture notes, journal articles, reports (both government and company), doctoral theses, standards, patents, and personal communications. It is important to identify and include relevant information only, and to state at the start of the survey what kind of information is required. 

Chemiluminescence technique has been used extensively at the department of Fibre and Polymer Technology at The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm. Since the beginning of the 1990s when the first CL equipment was introduced at the department more than 31 papers [44, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83]and eight doctoral theses [84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 9091] have been published where the chemiluminescence technique has been used, either as the main analytical technique or as a complement to other techniques. In this section, results from some of the investigations performed on polyolefins will be summarised. 

Virtually, all students of chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy and related subjects learn how to deduce molecular structures from nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. Undergraduate examinations routinely set problems using NMR spectra, and masters and doctoral theses describing novel synthetic or natural products provide many examples of how powerful NMR has become in structure elucidation. Existing texts on NMR spectroscopy generally deal with the physical background of the newer and older techniques as well as the relationships between NMR parameters and chemical structures. Very few, however, convey the know-how of structure...

Fortunately, there are now better ways to assess the inner state of our bodies cameras that make x-ray seem almost like a relic of the days of saddlebag doctors. These new devices rely on the dramatic advances in solid-state electronics and computer technology and on vastly improved knowledge of sound waves, infrared sources, the protons in the nuclei of hydrogen atoms, radio waves, magnetism, and in many applications, superconductivity. 

The FDA also permits advertising to consumers that does not mention the product name, but that identifies a disease condition and urges consumers to see their doctors. These are called help-seeking advertisements. However, the FDA is sensitive to efforts to make implicit product claims that, while not mentioning the product by name, might be understood by a reasonable consumer as referring to a particular product.

The historical development of the field and the results obtained by the principal authors have been presented in a series of review articles [3-7] and doctoral theses [8a-ij. 

In Volume 1 of this Series the development of olefin metathesis from 1964, the time this newly recognized catalytic reaction was reported, through the first half of 1976 was reviewed by Rooney and Stewart. Since their excellent report, interest in olefin metathesis has continued to be high, as evidenced by more than 700 publications, over 30 doctoral theses, and three international symposia (Mainz 1976, Amsterdam 1977, Lyon 1979 ) during the past four years, concerning this intriguing area of catalysis and olefin chemistry. Both overall " and specific aspects of olefin metathesis have been reviewed. 

By making narcotics illegal, the price skyrocketed and addicts were forced to commit petty crimes to pay for their habit.
