Capital cost estimates for chemical process plants are often based on an estimate of the purchase cost of the major equipment items required for the process, the other costs being estimated as factors of the equipment cost. The accuracy of this type of estimate will depend on what stage the design has reached at the time the estimate is made, and on the reliability of the data available on equipment costs. In the later stages of the project design, when detailed equipment specifications are available and firm quotations have been obtained, an accurate estimation of the capital cost of the project can be made. [Pg.250]

The DIPPR databases were developed in the United States by the Design Institute for Physical Properties of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. The DIPPR projects are aimed at providing evaluated process design data for the design of chemical processes and equipment (www.aiche.org/dippr/projects.htm). Pilot-scale treatability studies are enlargements of bench-scale tests, which more closely approach the full-scale project. As analytical chemists, we are often called upon to participate in studies that require the measurement of chemical or physical properties of materials. In many cases, it is evident that the measurements to be made will not provide the type of information that is required for the successful completion of the project. Thus, we find ourselves involved in more than Just the measurement aspect of the investigation —we become involved in carefully (re)formulating the questions to be answered by the study, identifying the type of information required to answer those questions, making appropriate measurements, and interpreting the results of those measurements. Design data and other process information are obtained during the development stage. This information is used as the basis for carrying out the additional phases of the design project. A complete market analysis is made, and samples of the final product are sent to prospective customers to determine if the product is satisfactory and if there is a reasonable sales potential. These must be prepared for each project to reflect its specific requirements -process, site conditions, safety, specific equipment, etc. A complete project specification must go into the details of equipment design data sheets, spelling out all the information, process, and/or mechanical, required to fabricate a piece of equipment. [Pg.57]
