Process Media

This includes organic and inorganic syntheses and other processing environments such as liquids or gases that affect materials.3 [Pg.332]

The nature of the corrosion product plays an important part in deciding if the reaction occurs through a film or film-free reaction. This can distinguish electrochemical from chemical reactions. If a film is formed due to the oxidation of the metal, the properties of this film, such as coverage and protection capacity, partial pressure, resistivity, porosity, [Pg.332]

Rust of iron (the most abundant corrosion product), and white rust of zinc are examples of nonprotective oxides. Aluminum and magnesium oxides are more protective than iron and zinc oxides. Patina on copper is protective in certain atmospheres. Stainless steels are passivated and protected, especially in chloride-free aqueous environments due to a very thin passive film of Cr2C 3 on the surface of the steel. Most films having low porosities can control the corrosion rate by diffusion of reactants through the him. In certain cases of uniform general corrosion of metals in acids (e.g., aluminum in hydrochloric acid or iron in reducible acids or alkalis), a thin him of oxide is present on the metal surface. These reactions cannot be considered hlm-free although the him is not a rate-determining one.1 [Pg.333]

IMS can be used for chemical analysis of vapours from electronics packaging [287]. IMS-QMS has been used to analyse headspace vapours in sealed electronic packages [275,288] and to follow outgassing of polymers [287]. Various types of photoresist solvents, phtha-late plasticisers and other polymer additives, such as BHT, were detected. Other applications of IMS in semiconductor technology involve failure analysis control of the efficiency of cleaning and etching steps characterisation of process media and surveillance of the atmosphere of clean rooms. [Pg.417]

Generally spoken, the use of non-redosing pressure rdief devices will offer, in most cases, the lower cost solution but requires that the process is shut down or redirected through alternative safety systems to allow for replacement of the burst device. Subsequendy non-redosing pressure relief devices will only be selected as primary relief solutions in cases where loss of process media or shutdown for repair is tolerated or possible (see Section 5.4). [Pg.34]

The use of bursting disc devices on the downstream side of safety valves may be considered in cases where corrosion or fouling of the valve trim may be a concern (a common problem in systems using common headers to evacuate process media). [Pg.35]

The statement above that some valves have polymeric parts which could become charged is indicative that the committee have perhaps not understood the process of some valves, particularly a ball in a ball valve being electrically isolated between two polymeric seats and becoming electrically charged by the effects of the process media the polymeric parts do not become charged, so it is not the same as a plastic pipe as they state. [Pg.88]

Corrosion of materials is a direct chemical reaction of a metal with its environment or a flow of electricity in an electrochemical reaction in an aggressive medium such as natural media (atmospheric, water or underground) or process media. Local cells (short-circuited) electrochemical cells of the same active metal or between an active metallic surface and that of another more noble conducting material can give rise to corrosion. The following general reaction may be written as ... [Pg.331]

The initial data for calculation of nuclear powered plant (NPP) radiation characteristics are the activity values in NPP equipment and process media. To a considerable extent the activity value depends on NPP running regime. [Pg.354]

Large volumes of low-pressure steam are probably wasted in your plant. Low-pressure steam, of course, heats process media and buildings, and deaerates feedwater and heats buildings. While high-pressure steam-consumption depends somewhat on relative humidity and plant-air temperature (especially for turbines at constant performance), use of low-pressure steam can fluctuate more, by 20% or greater, due to seasonal variations. [Pg.46]

Bovine serum albumin is often used as protein supplement in cell culture media, and residual bovine serum albumin in some formulations has occasionally caused adverse effects. Symptoms are usually mild, such as itching and urticaria. An anaphylactic reaction has been described in a patient undergoing bone marrow transplantation after the bone marrow cells had been kept in bovine serum albumin. As a component of sperm processing media, bovine serum albumin has caused adverse effects after intrauterine insemination (1). The risk of transmission of nvCJD by recombinant proteins is unknown, as cell cultures used for manufacturing them often contain bovine serum albumin (2). [Pg.553]

Under supercritical conditions, a gas, such as carbon dioxide, possesses liquid-like density and solubility, and gas-like diffusivity and viscosity, along with zero surface tension. Thus, supercritical fluids work extremely well as a processing media for a wide variety of chemical, biological, and polymer extractions. This solvent power of supercritical fluid has been known since 1879. Nevertheless, its application was not considered until recently when the sharp increases in energy cost, environmental regulations, and performance demands on materials have caused industry to consider alternative... [Pg.598]

Other processing media which embrace the green processing concept are the use of liquefied gases (e.g., LCO2) and certain liquids under pressure above their boiling point. By the application of external pressure, liquids such as... [Pg.583]

The FDA has indicated [12] that it expects the same SALs for all supposedly sterile products irrespective of the method of manufacture, and that acceptable SALs should be no worse than 10. Practically, aseptic manufacturing systems are validated (see below) by establishing that each individual process is doing what it is supposed to do, and then integrating these systems by reference to a biological test, the media fill or simulation trial. Media fills determine an upper limit for SALs based on probabilities of contamination that may result from particular filling processes. Media fills provide no data on survival of microorganisms in products they do not therefore constitute a measure of product SALs. [Pg.215]

Scheduled media fill requalifications shall occur at least every six months for each aseptic process and filling line. The media fill run shall be of sufficient duration to cover all manipulations normally performed in actual processing. Media fill evaluations shall be incubated for at least 14 days at temperature ranges of 20-25 and 30-35. Requalification acceptance criteria shall meet the number of runs and total filled units which is summarised as follows ... [Pg.642]

Corrosion-Resistant Binder for Fiberglass Composites. A second application of furan resins is as a premium, corrosion-resistant binder for fiberglass for fabrication of FRP structures for the chemical process industry. Structures can be easily fabricated using "hand lay-up" techniques used to fabricate polyester composites (see Figure 4). In this fashion, pipes, ducts, tanks, scrubbers, etc., are produced for use with process media which quickly... [Pg.12]

What the raw product should be like to provide suitable yield and quality is dictated as much as anything by the final form of the processed product. The unit operations themselves and the nature of the machines and processing media or chemicals used to implement them have additional requirements and effects. Together they determine, for instance, whether there will be opportunity to exclude undesirable or damaged parts of the fruit, whether the texture needs to be extra firm or the solids content preferably high, and whether such factors as browning rate or juiciness are likely to be problems. Each product seems to have a different combination of requirements, as shown by the ratings in Table 2 and amplified in the text to follow. [Pg.67]

Processing Agents Agents or media used in the manufacture, preparation, and treatment of a material or article to improve its processing or properties. The agents often become a part of the material. Also called Process Media, Processing Aids, and Processing Additives. [Pg.208]

In addition, dangerous properties, if not present under nominal operating conditions, may evolve upon contact of process media with auxiliary media such as coolants or lubricants. After release, reactions with substances present in the environment, e.g. the humidity of the air, may give rise to dangerous properties. [Pg.2]
