Preventive maintenance hazards

To complement hazard controls, you also must have good management systems that involve preventive maintenance hazard correction tracking a fair and consistent enforcement of rules, procedures, work practices, and PPE a solid system for responding to unexpected emergencies and a good medical program that helps to identify hazards and minimize harm if injuries and work-related illnesses occur [2]. [Pg.224]

The selection of materials to be used in design dictates a basic understanding of the behavior of materials and the principles that govern such behavior. If proper design of suitable materials of construction is incorporated, the eqiiipment should deteriorate at a uniform and anticipated gradual rate, which will allow scheduled maintenance or replacement at regular inteivals. If localized forms of corrosion are characteristic of the combination of materials and environment, the materials engineer should still be able to predict the probable life of equipment, or devise an appropriate inspection schedule to preclude unexpected failures. The concepts of predictive, or at least preventive, maintenance are minimum requirements to proper materials selection. This approach to maintenance is certainly intended to minimize the possibility of unscheduled production shutdowns because of corrosion failures, with their attendant possible financial losses, hazard to personnel and equipment, and resultant environmental pollution. [Pg.2424]

If oil is pressurized by compressed air, an explosive hazard exists. If high-pressure air encounters the oil, it may create a diesel effect, which may result in an explosion. A carefully followed preventive maintenance plan is the best precaution against explosions. [Pg.584]

In addition to the product, the designer, equipment installer, user, and all others involved in production should all consider performing a risk assessment and target in the direction of perfection. The production is reviewed for hazards created by each part of the line when operating as well as when equipment fails to perform or complete its task. This action includes startups and shutdowns, preventative maintenance, QC/inspection, repair, etc. [Pg.277]

Identified hazards can either be reduced at the root (e.g., reduction of inventory) or by introduction of protective systems (e.g., automatic emergency shutdown). The increased understanding of the chemistry and the process that is obtained from hazard evaluation procedures provides guidance for many other elements of process safety management as well (e.g., procedural instructions, emergency strategies, personnel training, and preventive maintenance). [Pg.175]

Process safety is a prerequisite to worker safety and begins when the plant or manufacturing line is on the drawing board. From comprehensive design and hazard analysis through preventive maintenance and employee training, we assure our operations not only meet the Occupational Safety Health Administration s (OSHA) Process Safety Management standard, but also are intrinsically safe. [Pg.14]

Primary measures are tending to eliminate hazard potentials or to protect from risks by using intrinsically safe measures of construction and design. Such risks could be the appearance of explosive atmospheres, pressure overload or overheating. In addition the primary measures reduce the preventive maintenance... [Pg.218]

Recommendation I. Even though a RAC of 3D is considered acceptable with review, hazard risk reduction is still warranted, especially in consideration of the two reported incidents. In order to ensure maximum possible reduction of the hazard risk associated with a failure of the plunger joint components, it is recommended that routine preventive-maintenance inspections include replacement of the plunger joint O-ring component. This action would further reduce the probability of occurrence to the improbable level. Once recommended control actions are in place, a controlled RAC of 3E (marginal/improbable) can be assigned. [Pg.90]

Latent conditions can lie dormant for a long while before hazardous conditions emerge. One example of a latent condition at play in today s health care environment is deferred preventive maintenance on equipment to reduce costs. As equipment continues to be used, risk increases for glitches and problems. [Pg.51]

A preventative maintenance program, including a replacement schedule, must be in place. Management must ensure that all hazardous materials and processes are identified and that procedures are developed and implemented to ensure safety. [Pg.780]

Preventive maintenance s ultimate purpose is to prevent accidents caused by vehicle deficiencies, machinery defects, or equipment hazards. Worn, failed, or incorrectly adjusted components can cause or contribute to accidents. Preventive maintenance and periodic inspection procedures help prevent failures from occurring while the vehicle/machine/equipment is being operated. Such procedures also reduce reliance on the operator, who may have limited skill and knowledge for detecting these deficiencies. [Pg.240]

The local fire department must be well acquainted with your facility, its location, and specific hazards. The fire alarm system mnst be certified, as required, and tested at least annually. Interior standpipes must be inspected regularly. Outside private fire hydrants must be flushed at least once a year and on a routine preventive maintenance schedule. All fire doors and shutters must be in good operating condition, unobstructed, and protected against obstructions, including their counterweights. [Pg.433]

Maintenance An effective safety and health program will provide for facility and equipment maintenance, so that hazardous breakdowns are prevented. There is a comprehensive safety and preventive maintenance program that maximizes equipment reliabihty. [Pg.471]

The prevention and control of hazards can be accomplished in many ways. The primary way is through the reporting of hazards by employees and the correction of hazards by supervisors or other company qualified personnel. Second, employers can use preventive maintenance programs, special emphasis programs, training, workplace audits, engineering controls, administrative controls, and, as a last resort, personal protective equipment. [Pg.473]
