Hazards detection

Comparative studies involving toxicity tests abound in the scientific literature. There are many reasons compelling ecotoxicologists to conduct work of this nature, some of which are directed 1) to assess the performance, sensitivity and relevance of individual bioassays undertaken on various chemicals and (liquid and solid) media to specify their scope of use, 2) to optimize the diagnostic potential of bioassay batteries to broaden hazard detection (insure that tests in a battery are complementary and not redundant) and 3) to promote the application of novel assays capable of high throughput for cost-effective screening of (complex) environmental samples.

The sensory environment in which job tasks are carried out influences worker perceptual capabilities to detect hazards and respond to them. Being able to see or smell a hazard is an important prerequisite in dealing with it therefore, workplaces have to provide a proper workplace sensory environment for hazard detection. This means proper illumination and noise control and adequate ventilation. 

In the first law dedicated to the issues of asbestos in schools, the Asbestos School Hazard Detection and Control Act of 1980, Congress authorized the Department of Education to provide grants to schools to detect and abate asbestos hazards. 

Hazard detection has been shown above to be dependent on the mental models people have of the way in which events happen and systems develop. If these mental models are incomplete or wrong they can lead to inappropriate behaviour in the face of hazards. Interview studies show that such problems frequently occur, particularly in relation to occupational disease hazards. Examples of such significant inaccuracies are ...

One element of safety management is to look at the behavior of employees and the organizational culture. Everyone has a responsibility for safety and should participate in management system efforts. Modern organization safety has progressed from safety by compliance to a more appropriate concept of prevention by planning. Reliance on compliance could translate to after-the-fact hazard detection that does not identify organizational errors that are often the contributors to incidents [5].

Surprisingly little scientific study has been made of how hazard detection and recognition operates in any of these situations and what alerts people to the presence of danger. What follows is a summary of the available information . It starts with some general information about perception and then takes each of the three situations above in turn. 

Inputs which do not vary at all are usually not particularly useful to the system, e.g. a constant noise or smell, a clock ticking, the sensation of clothes rubbing on the skin. The filter alters over time to exclude such constant stimuli from consciousness. As soon as they change, however, e.g. the clock stops, the filter lets through this information and we notice it. In this way we are alerted very efficiently to something wrong and we can go in search of it. This seems to be one of our main hazard detection devices. 

Misuse Scenario. Emergency preparedness for the misuse scenario can be achieved by prompt epidemiological surveillance that detects and recognizes a common source for seemingly disparate illnesses or deaths. Hazard detection can be followed by prompt action to remove contaminated products from the marketplace and warn consumers to return items from potentially contaminated lots to official collection points. 

PHA is conducted in several steps (Echterling, 2011) including hazards detection, preliminary classification into risk categories, assessing mitigation or reduction measures and checks if the applied measures comply with the expectations. 

The analyses of crash rates of drivers as they mature and gain experience, the benefits of a prolonged supervised graduated driver training, and the hazard detection and attentional deficiencies that young drivers exhibit, all indicate the need for a better driver training...
