Pressure compensation

The typical operating pressure of filter presses is 600 or 700 kPa, although some manufacturers offer presses for 2000 kPa or higher. As the pressure increases during filtration, it forces the plates apart this maybe offset by a pressure compensation faciHty offered with some large mechanized presses. [Pg.399]

The pressure at which the valve is expected to open (set pressure) is usually selected as high as possible consistent with the effect of possible high pressure on die process as well as the containing vessel. Some reactions have a rapid increase in temperature when pressure increases, and this may fix the maximum allowable process pressure. In other situations the pressure rise above operating must be kept to some differential, and the safety valve must relieve at the peak value. A set pressure at the maximum value (whether maximum allowable working pressure of vessel, or other, but insuring protection to the weakest part of the system) requires the smallest valve. This component consists of a housing with two fittings for the hose connections to the pressure sensor and to the lower suds container. The main problem, the height-dependent differential pressure between the catho-lyte gap and oxygen across the ODC, could be solved with the pressure compensation system based on oxygen supply via gas pockets [1] (see Fig. 4.2). For HCI electrolysis the cathodic reaction product is water, which is easily drained through the ODC without affecting the membrane water content. Consequently, the ODC can be attached directly to the membrane and pressure compensation is not necessary. The cell concept, which was developed in another co-operation with DeNora, could not be simpler - the basic cell principle is shown in Fig. 4.6.
