Ladders extension

You have to be clear about the requirements and what is meant by successfully completing the task. Academy instructors do not want to see someone race through the exercises without being able to demonstrate control. For example, being able to raise an extension ladder to the prescribed length, but then letting it crash down to beat the deadline, won t meet the requirements of the test. 

Ladder carry/raise Remove an extension ladder from a holder and carry it either around cones or through an obstacle course to a designated spot (possibly back where you began, to replace the ladder on the holder). Some tests require you to set the ladder up properly and then raise and lower the extension by pulling a rope hand over hand. 

Practice Find an extension ladder, load it up with weights and carry it around. A barbell loaded with weights is another good practice item. 

Lithiation of pyrrolidine, H26(CH2)3NH, in hexane produces a white insoluble powder, (H2(5(CH LNLi ]n (21,150). This is assumed to have an extensive ladder structure (Section III,A Fig. 26c) compare the cyclized-ladder structure of crystalline [H2C(CH2)5NLi]6 (164). Extension ladders should be erected in the closed position and extended one section at a time. Each section should overlap by at least the number of rungs indicated below ... 

Long ladders or extension ladders should be erected by two people as shown in Fig. 1.20. One person stands on or foots the ladder, while the other person lifts and walks under the ladder towards the wall. When the ladder is upright it can be positioned in the correct place, at the comect angle and secured before being climbed.

Be aware of overhead wires and live electrical circuits. Metal extension ladders conduct electricity and can create a danger of electrocution. Wood and fiberglass ladders don t (if they re dry). It s important that you read and follow all instructions and labels that come with the ladder.

OSHA found workers exposed to 26-foot falls from a makeshift work platform comprised of a fiberglass extension ladder laid horizontally atop a pump jack scaffold. One month later, an OSHA inspection at the same jobsite found workers exposed to 24-foot falls from similar hazards including a work platform consisting of half an aluminum extension ladder with two dressed pieces of lumber on top of the ladder. 

Types There are many types of ladders. They are classified by material of construction (wood, metal), load capacity, function and design. Some ladders are classified as type I, II, or in, depending on the standard loads (200,225, and 250 lb) used for certain tests. Most ladders are manufactured and sold for use. However, some ladders are job-made ladders, assembled at job sites. Ladders can be portable or fixed in place. Common types of portable ladders are step, platform, straight and extension ladders. Multipurpose ladders adjust to serve as several single-purpose ladders. Some ladders, such as those on truck trailers, have custom designs to fit around other design elements. There are many standards for ladder construction. 

Ladders must withstand reasonable forces applied to them without coUapsing or having other structural failures. Inspections will help locate defects and assure integrity. Repair or throw away defective ladders. Misuse and improper use can create structural failure. For example, an extension ladder must have a minimum amount of overlap between sections. If not, the bending load at the connection wUl cause failure. The exact amount depends on the ladder length. 

When a straight or extension ladder provides a route to a higher work surface, the top of the ladder should extend 3 ft or more above the upper surface. This provides a handhold when getting on or off the ladder and allows a user to step from the ladder to the upper surface. 

Special Scaffolds There are many kinds of specialty scaffolds. Ladder jacks attach to straight or extension ladders. Two ladders with ladder jacks will support planks between them. Users nail roofing brackets to roofs with steep slopes or suspend them with ropes and proper anchors. The brackets support planks between them that workers stand on. After roofing is complete, users remove the planks and brackets.

Be sure all locks on an extension ladder are properly engaged. 

Raise an extension ladder before extending it If you place a ladder in firont of a door, make sure the door is locked or blocked. 

Step on the top two steps of a stepladder or the top three ladder rungs of an extension ladder.
