The conductors of a cable are made of either copper or aluminium and may be stranded or solid. Solid conductors are only used in fixed wiring installations and may be shaped in larger cables. Stranded conductors are more flexible and conductor sizes from 4.0 to 25 mm contain seven strands. A10mm conductor, for example, has seven 1.35 mm diameter strands which collectively make up the 10mm cross-sectional area of the cable. Conductors above 25 mm have more than seven strands, depending upon the size of the cable. Flexible cords have multiple strands of very fine wire conductors, as fine as one strand of human hair. This gives the cable its very flexible quality. [Pg.208]

Flexible metallic conduit should have a non-metallic inner sheath or be suitably designed so that movement cannot cause abrasion of the cables. Flexible metallic conduit is not a suitable protective conductor. A flexible cable conductor should be used for this purpose to ensure earth continuity between the fixed conduit and apparatus, and the flexible conduit joints should be earth bonded at both ends. [Pg.270]

Nitrile mbber finds broad application in industry because of its excellent resistance to oil and chemicals, its good flexibility at low temperatures, high abrasion and heat resistance (up to 120°C), and good mechanical properties. Nitrile mbber consists of butadiene—acrylonitrile copolymers with an acrylonitrile content ranging from 15 to 45% (see Elastomers, SYNTHETIC, NITRILE RUBBER). In addition to the traditional applications of nitrile mbber for hoses, gaskets, seals, and oil well equipment, new applications have emerged with the development of nitrile mbber blends with poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). These blends combine the chemical resistance and low temperature flexibility characteristics of nitrile mbber with the stability and ozone resistance of PVC. This has greatly expanded the use of nitrile mbber in outdoor applications for hoses, belts, and cable jackets, where ozone resistance is necessary. [Pg.186]

After 10 years of unabated rapid growth in the plenum wire and cable market, fluoropolymers including PVDE, primarily the flexible VDE/HEP copolymer, are beginning to lose market share to lower priced PVC-akoys. Properties desired in cable insulation and flexible circuit substrate materials include mechanical flexibiUty, fatigue endurance, and resistance to chemicals, water absorption, and abrasion. Both thermoplasts and thermosets are used as cable-insulating materials. Thermoplastic materials possess excellent electrical characteristics and are available at relatively low cost. [Pg.534]

Low Temperature Performance. The abihty of plasticized PVC to remain flexible at low temperatures is of great importance in certain apphcations, eg, external tarpaulins or underground cables. Eor this property the choice of the acid constituent of the plasticizer ester is also important. Electrical Applications. Plastics are used for electrical insulation, conduit and enclosures, lighting fixtures, and mechanical devices. The most widely used plastic for wire and cable insulation is flexible, plasticized PVC, which constitutes well over half the market in insulating wires for buildings, automobiles, appHances, and power and control lines. Electrical Connections. Electric current is brought from the transformers by air-cooled copper busbars and close to the electrode by water-cooled bus tubes and flexible cables, connecting to water-cooled copper contact plates at the electrode. The plates are held against the electrode by hydraulic pressure. Slotted beam or U-contacts describe a versatile design for the termination of soHd wire and require that the wire be pushed into a narrow slot between two moderately rigid tines, or beams, at the back end of the separable contact (Fig. 8). The edges of the beams displace the insulation, squee2e the wire, and keep it in compression for the life of the connection. This termination method was developed for terminating conductors in a gang using flexible flat cables with round conductors (5). [Pg.26]

Polymer cable anodes are made of a conducting, stabilized and modified plastic in which graphite is incorporated as the conducting material. A copper cable core serves as the means of current lead. The anode formed by the cable is flexible, mechanically resistant and chemically stable. The cable anodes have an external diameter of 12.7 mm. The cross-section of the internal copper cable is 11.4 mm and its resistance per unit length R is consequently 2 mQ m l The maximum current delivery per meter of cable is about 20 mA for a service life of 10 years.
