Polyvinyl butyral plastic

Group of plastics composed of resins derived from vinyl monomers, excluding those that are covered by other classifications (i.e., acrylics and styrene plastics). Examples include PVC, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl butyral, and various... [Pg.141]

Ethyl alcohol has been made by the hydration of ethylene (9) since 1930. Like isopropyl alcohol, part of the output is used as a solvent, but most is converted to other oxygenated chemicals. Its most important raw material use is conversion to acetaldehyde by catalytic air oxidation. Acetaldehyde, in turn, is the raw material source of acetic acid, acetic anhydride, pentaerythritol, synthetic n-butyl alcohol (via aldol condensation), butyraldehyde, and other products. Butyraldehyde is the source of butyric acid, polyvinyl butyral resin, and 2-ethylhexanol (octyl alcohol). The last-named eight-carbon alcohol is based on the aldol condensation of butyraldehyde and is used to make the important plasticizer di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate. A few examples of the important reactions of acetaldehyde are as follows ... [Pg.294]

Polyvinyl butyral - A nonvapor or liquid permeable plasticized polymer formulation with additive materials that forms a continuous film from an ethanol solution ( 5 min). [Pg.63]

Butanal is used in the manufacture of rubber accelerators, synthetic resins, solvents, and plasticizers. -Butyraldehyde is used as an intermediate in the manufacturing of plasticizers, alcohols, solvents, and polymers (such as 2-ethylhexanol, -butanol, trim-ethylolpropane, -butyric acid, polyvinyl butyral, methyl amyl ketone). It is also used as an intermediate to make pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, antioxidants, rubber accelerators, textile auxiliaries, perfumery, and flavors. It has no therapeutic use at the present time. [Pg.367]

Butyl ricinoleate, is a plasticizer for polyvinyl butyral, rosin, vinsol resin, and cellulose acetate butyrate resins. Can also be used as a general purpose plasticizer for both nitrocellulose and ethylcellulose. [Pg.194]

Paraplex [Hall]. TM for polymeric plasticizers for polymers and resinous coatings. Primarily polyesters, but some are epoxidized oils that impart heat and light stability as well as plasticization. Supplied as viscous liquids in a range of molecular weights all at 100% solids. Compatible with polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl butyral, cellulosics, and other high polymers and elastomers. [Pg.945]

Saflex [Solutia], TM for polyvinyl butyral adhesive film supplied in clear, translucent, tinted, or graduated color, for the plastic interlayer in safety glass. [Pg.1103]

Butyraldehyde is used mainly as an intermediate in the production of synthetic resins, rubber vulcanization accelerators, solvents, and plasticizers. It reacts with polyvinyl alcohol to form polyvinyl butyral which is used as an interlayer for safety glass as well as for coating fabrics. Isobutyraldehyde is used as a solvent or plasticizer in the plastics industry, or as a raw material in the synthesis of isobutyl alcohol, methacrylic acid, neopentyl glycol, etc. [Pg.184]

Plasticizer used with PVC resins, in PVC plastisols, rubber application including wire coatings, ajtomotive and furniture upholstery compatible with acrylics, CAB, cellulose nitrate, polyvinyl butyral, styrene, oxidizing alkyds, nitrile rubber. Solid mp = 30-34° bp = 400 d = 0.980. Eastman Chem. Co. [Pg.71]

The most widely used polyvinyl acetal is polyvinyl butyral (PVB). This transparent amorphous plastic is used as a plastidzed polymer in the inner lining of safety windshield glass (Saflex). Because of the presence of hydroxyl groups, the commercial product, which is produced frcmi 75% hydrolyzed PVAc. has a of about 49 C and has excellent adhesion to glass. [Pg.237]

Plasticized polyvinyl butyral (PVB) Is easy to process because It Is thermoplastic rather than thermosetting, but has the disadvantage of containing plasticizer (see below). [Pg.374]

The two pottant materials studied in this report are plasticized polyvinyl butyral (plPVB) which is easily available and used in safety glass, and a highly stabilized, peroxide crosslinked ethylene/vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer containing about 33 weight % vinyl acetate (.7). The outer cover/insulator materials studied include polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) and a butyl aerylate/methyl methacrylate graft copolymer (BAgMMA) both are blown films. [Pg.392]
