Other Polymers. Besides polycarbonates, poly(methyl methacrylate)s, cycfic polyolefins, and uv-curable cross-linked polymers, a host of other polymers have been examined for their suitabiUty as substrate materials for optical data storage, preferably compact disks, in the last years. These polymers have not gained commercial importance polystyrene (PS), poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), cellulose acetobutyrate (CAB), bis(diallylpolycarbonate) (BDPC), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), styrene—acrylonitrile copolymers (SAN), poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAC), and for substrates with high resistance to heat softening, polysulfones (PSU) and polyimides (PI). [Pg.162]

Nucleophilic Substitution Route. Commercial synthesis of poly(arylethersulfone)s is accompHshed almost exclusively via the nucleophilic substitution polycondensation route. This synthesis route, discovered at Union Carbide in the early 1960s (3,4), involves reaction of the bisphenol of choice with 4,4 -dichlorodiphenylsulfone in a dipolar aprotic solvent in the presence of an alkaUbase. Examples of dipolar aprotic solvents include A/-methyl-2-pyrrohdinone (NMP), dimethyl acetamide (DMAc), sulfolane, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Examples of suitable bases are sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, and potassium carbonate. In the case of polysulfone (PSE) synthesis, the reaction is a two-step process in which the dialkah metal salt of bisphenol A (1) is first formed in situ from bisphenol A [80-05-7] by reaction with the base (eg, two molar equivalents of NaOH),... [Pg.460]

There has been considerable research on chlorine-resistant RO membranes (48—52). A poly(/n j -2,5 dimethyl)pipera2inthiofura2anainide used in the presence of low (3 mg/L) concentrations of chlorine resulted in a membrane life of three years (48). A copolyamide hoUow-fiber membrane for use in desalination has been developed that is resistant to 0.5 mg/L chlorine (49). Millipore Corporation has also developed a sulfonated polysulfone member that has desirable chlorine-resistance properties. [Pg.150]

Polymer Solvent. Sulfolane is a solvent for a variety of polymers, including polyacrylonitrile (PAN), poly(vinyhdene cyanide), poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), poly(vinyl fluoride), and polysulfones (124—129). Sulfolane solutions of PAN, poly(vinyhdene cyanide), and PVC have been patented for fiber-spinning processes, in which the relatively low solution viscosity, good thermal stabiUty, and comparatively low solvent toxicity of sulfolane are advantageous. Powdered perfluorocarbon copolymers bearing sulfo or carboxy groups have been prepared by precipitation from sulfolane solution with toluene at temperatures below 300°C. Polymerization Solvent. Sulfolane can be used alone or in combination with a cosolvent as a polymerization solvent for polyureas, polysulfones, polysUoxanes, polyether polyols, polybenzimidazoles, polyphenylene ethers, poly(l,4-benzamide) (poly(imino-l,4-phenylenecarbonyl)), sUylated poly(amides), poly(arylene ether ketones), polythioamides, and poly(vinylnaphthalene/fumaronitrile) initiated by laser (134—144). Advantages of using sulfolane as a polymerization solvent include increased polymerization rate, ease of polymer purification, better solubilizing characteristics, and improved thermal stabUity. The increased polymerization rate has been attributed not only to an increase in the reaction temperature because of the higher boiling point of sulfolane, but also to a decrease in the activation energy of polymerization as a result of the contribution from the sulfonic group of the solvent. [Pg.70]

Membrane stmcture is a function of the materials used (polymer composition, molecular weight distribution, solvent system, etc) and the mode of preparation (solution viscosity, evaporation time, humidity, etc). It is well known that anionic samples tend to adsorb on poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) resins. However, cationic samples tend to be repelled from the resins. The mechanism seems to be an ionic interaction, although the poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) resin should be neutral. The reason is not well clarified. Therefore, it is recommended to add some salt in the elution solvent when adsorption or repulsion is observed in the analyses of polar samples. For example, polysulfone can be analyzed successfully using dimethylformamide containing 10 mM lithium bromide as an elution solvent, as shown in Fig. 4.42. [Pg.144]

Many engineering thermoplastics (e.g., polysulfone, polycarbonate, etc.) have limited utility in applications that require exposure to chemical environments. Environmental stress cracking [13] occurs when a stressed polymer is exposed to solvents. Poly(aryl ether phenylquin-oxalines) [27] and poly(aryl ether benzoxazoles) [60] show poor resistance to environmental stress cracking in the presence of acetone, chloroform, etc. This is expected because these structures are amorphous, and there is no crystallinity or liquid crystalline type structure to give solvent resistance. Thus, these materials may have limited utility in processes or applications that require multiple solvent coatings or exposures, whereas acetylene terminated polyaryl ethers [13] exhibit excellent processability, high adhesive properties, and good resistance to hydraulic fluid. [Pg.56]
