The stabilizing action of sulfur-containing compoimds is related to their ability to decompose peroxide and hydroperoxide groups without the formation of free radicals, as well as to their property of terminating the reaction chains in the decomposition of polymers. Sulfur-containing compounds are used in practice as thermal stabilizers, since many of them prove to be insufficiently stable to the action of ultraviolet light and can cause sensitized decomposition of the poljmaer when the composition is irradiated. There is information that the activity of mercapto derivatives, in particular, dodecyl mercaptan, in the process of thermal decomposition of pol5Tvinyl chloride, does not decrease when the temperature is raised to 190-200°C [278]. [Pg.211]

Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene. This elastomer is made by the simultaneous chlorination and chlorosulfonation of polyethylene in an inert solvent. The resulting polymer is an odorless, colorless chip that is mixed and processed on conventional mbber equipment. Thiophenes continue to play a major role in commercial applications as well as basic research. In addition to its aromatic properties that make it a useful replacement for benzene in small molecule syntheses, thiophene is a key element in superconductors, photochemical switches and polymers. The presence of sulfur-containing components (especially thiophene and benzothiophene) in crude petroleum requires development of new catalysts to promote their removal (hydrodesulfurization, HDS) at refineries. Making paper without pollution requires that each part of the process be nonpolluting. The chemicals most commonly used in the production of pulp are NaOH and Na2 S. In modem paper mills, sulfur-containing by-products are scmbbed from the plant exhaust, and the aqueous sodium hydroxide is reclaimed and recycled. The fillers used to make paper opaque—titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and kaolin (a clay)—are natural, nonpolluting minerals.
