The stabilizing action of sulfur-containing compoimds is related to their ability to decompose peroxide and hydroperoxide groups without the formation of free radicals, as well as to their property of terminating the reaction chains in the decomposition of polymers. Sulfur-containing compounds are used in practice as thermal stabilizers, since many of them prove to be insufficiently stable to the action of ultraviolet light and can cause sensitized decomposition of the poljmaer when the composition is irradiated. There is information that the activity of mercapto derivatives, in particular, dodecyl mercaptan, in the process of thermal decomposition of pol5Tvinyl chloride, does not decrease when the temperature is raised to 190-200°C [278]. 

Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene. This elastomer is made by the simultaneous chlorination and chlorosulfonation of polyethylene in an inert solvent. The resulting polymer is an odorless, colorless chip that is mixed and processed on conventional mbber equipment. The polymer typically contains 20-40% chlorine and 1% sulfur groups (see ElASTOL RS, SYNTHETIC-Cm OROSULFONATEDPOLYETHYLENE) (8). 

Thiophenes continue to play a major role in commercial applications as well as basic research. In addition to its aromatic properties that make it a useful replacement for benzene in small molecule syntheses, thiophene is a key element in superconductors, photochemical switches and polymers. The presence of sulfur-containing components (especially thiophene and benzothiophene) in crude petroleum requires development of new catalysts to promote their removal (hydrodesulfurization, HDS) at refineries. Interspersed with these commercial applications, basic research on thiophene has continued to study its role in electrocyclic reactions, newer routes for its formation and substitution and new derivatives of therapeutic potential. New reports of selenophenes and tellurophenes continue to be modest in number. 

Making paper without pollution requires that each part of the process be nonpolluting. The chemicals most commonly used in the production of pulp are NaOH and Na2 S. In modem paper mills, sulfur-containing by-products are scmbbed from the plant exhaust, and the aqueous sodium hydroxide is reclaimed and recycled. The fillers used to make paper opaque—titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and kaolin (a clay)—are natural, nonpolluting minerals. The polymer binders and sizers are relatively easy to recapture from the aqueous waste stream. 

Phaeomelanins — This gronp consists of sulfur-containing polymers composed of benzothiazines, derived from cysteinyl-DOPA. 

Potentiometric titration procedures with sodium methoxide have been reported for non-sulfur-containing organotin compounds in solvent extracts of polymers, and for phenolic antioxidants with sodium isopropox-ide in pyridine medium [21]. Organotin compounds in solvent extracts of PVC can be determined by potentiometric and manual titration procedures [487,488]. 

The amounts oi adsorption of the polymer on latex and silica particles were measured as follows. Three milliliters of the polymer solution containing a known concentration was introduced into an adsorption tube(lO ml volume) which contained 2 ml of latex (C = l+.O wt %) and silica(C = 2.0 wt %) suspensions. After being rotated(l0 rpm) end-over-end for 1 hr in a water bath at a constant temperature, the colloid particles were separated from the solution by centrifugation(25000 G, 30 min.) under a controlled temperature. The polymer concentration that remained in the supernatant was measured colorimetrically, using sulfuric acid and phenol for the cellulose derivatives(12), and potassium iodide, iodine and boric acid for PVA(13). From these measurements, the number of milligrams of adsorbed polymer per square meter of the adsorbent surface was calculated using a calibration curve.

Some derivatives of 1,2,3-trithiolane have been used as starting materials for sulfur-containing polymers <84MI 4l5-0l>. Industrial applications for 1,2,3-trithiolane derivatives include their use as high-pressure lubricant oil additives <88EGP258606>, plasticizers and antioxidants <89EGP263770>. 

Subsequent epidemiological studies have supported the association between better health and long-term consumption of diets rich in foods of plant origin. " However, whether this is because such diets minimize exposure to deleterious substances (e.g., oxidized cholesterol, pyrolysis mutagens, salt, saturated fat, etc.), or maximize intake of certain beneficial nutrients (e.g., isothiocyanates and other sulfur-containing plant constituents, mono-unsaturated fatty acids, and poly-unsaturated fatty acids, PPT, poly acetylenes, selenium, terpenes, etc.) or some combination as advocated in the Polymeal concept, remains unknown. " An in vitro study indicates that there may be mechanistic basis for true synergy between PPT and isothiocyanates. ...
