Polarization of sample

To sum up, gradient elution may be applied to the separation of samples composed of solutes of differentiated chromatographic behavior, for increasing throughput in preparative TLC, for removal of ballast (nonpolar) matrix from the analytes in the first gradient step, for decreasing the detection limit by the compression of spots, for the preliminary estimation of the polarity of sample components, and for acceleration of the choice of optimal conditions of chromatographic analysis. [Pg.761]

A proper SEC experiment has to be balanced with respect to polarities. In order to obtain a true and pure SEC separation, the polarity of stationary phase (column material), the polarity of eluent, and the polarity of sample have to be matched. This is visualized by the magic triangle (Fig. 9.6). Dominance of size separation is only maintained in the center of the triangle (bright area), where the overall systan is balanced. Otherwise, specific interactions will occur, which will overlay with the normal SEC elution behavior. [Pg.176]

A RIKES experunent is essentially identical to that of CW CARS, except the probe laser need not be tunable. The probe beam is linearly polarized at 0° (—>), while the polarization of the tunable pump beam is controlled by a linear polarizer and a quarter waveplate. The pump and probe beams, whose frequency difference must match the Raman frequency, are overlapped in the sample (just as in CARS). The strong pump beam propagating tlirough a nonlinear medium induces an anisotropic change in the refractive mdices seen by tlie weaker probe wave, which alters the polarization of a probe beam [96]. The signal field is polarized orthogonally to the probe laser and any altered polarization may be detected as an increase in intensity transmitted tlirough a crossed polarizer. When the pump beam is Imearly polarized at 45° y), contributions... [Pg.1207]

Disclinations in tire nematic phase produce tire characteristic Schlieren texture, observed under tire microscope using crossed polars for samples between glass plates when tire director takes nonunifonn orientations parallel to tire plates. In thicker films of nematics, textures of dark flexible filaments are observed, whetlier in polarized light or not. This texture, in fact, gave rise to tire tenn nematic (from tire Greek for tliread ) [40]. The director fields... [Pg.2551]

Reversed-phase columns are used to separate polar substances. Although in LC the stationary phase is a solid, it is necessary to bear in mind that there may be a thin film of liquid (e.g water) held on its surface, and this film will modify the behavior of sample components equilibrating between the mobile and stationary phases. A textbook on LC should be consulted for deeper discussion on such aspects. [Pg.250]

Stripping voltammetry procedure has been developed for determination of thallium(I) traces in aqueous medium on a mercury film electrode with application of thallium preconcentration by coprecipitation with manganese (IV) hydroxide. More than 90% of thallium present in water sample is uptaken by a deposit depending on conditions of prepai ation of precipitant. Direct determination of thallium was carried out by stripping voltammetry in AC mode with anodic polarization of potential in 0,06 M ascorbic acid in presence of 5T0 M of mercury(II) on PU-1 polarograph. [Pg.209]

The diffraction mechanisms in XPD and AED are virtually identical this section will focus on only one of these techniques, with the understanding that any conclusions drawn apply equally to both methods, except where stated otherwise. XPD will be the technique discussed, given some of the advantages it has over AED, such as reduced sample degradation for ionic and organic materials, quantification of chemical states and, for conditions usually encountered at synchrotron radiation facilities, its dependence on the polarization of the X rays. For more details on the excitation process the reader is urged to review the relevant articles in the Encyclopedia and appropriate references in Fadley. ... [Pg.241]

The principal of measurement is shown schematically in Fig. 4.61. Linear polarized light is reflected from a sample surface which must be flat and sufficiently reflecting. The state of polarization of the incident light is changed, by reflection, into ellipti-... [Pg.265]
