Plastics manufacturing, chemicals used

Most manufacturers sell a portion of their alcohol product on the merchant market, retaining a portion for internal use, typically for the manufacture of plasticizers. Sterling Chemicals linear alcohol of 7, 9, and 11 carbons is all used captively. Plasticizer range linear alcohols derived from natural fats and oils, for instance, octanol and decanol derived from coconut oil and 2-octanol derived from castor oil, are of only minor importance in the marketplace. [Pg.443]

Industrial ethanol is one of the largest-volume organic chemicals used in industrial and consumer products. The main uses for ethanol are as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals (Table 8) and as a solvent. As a solvent, ethanol is second only to water. Ethanol is a key raw material in the manufacture of dmgs, plastics, lacquers, poHshes, plasticizers, perfumes, and cosmetics. Around 1960, manufacture of ethanol was the top consumer of ethylene in the United States, but since 1965 it has rated below manufacture of ethylene oxide and polyethylene. [Pg.414]

Alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs) are nonionic surfactants that are used in the manufacturing of plastics, agricultural chemicals, cosmetics, herbicides, and industrial detergent formulations. Alkylphenols such as nonylphenol (NP) are the products of... [Pg.281]

Reports of heightened sensitivity to chemicals have been documented since the 1800s. Since World War II, there has been a dramatic rise in the manufacture and use of synthesized chemicals like pesticides, plastics, and artificial fragrances, and the incidence of MCS has steadily grown. One of the first doctors to identify the relationship between low-level chemical exposures and chronic illness was Theron Randolph in the 1950s. [Pg.268]

This presentation discusses current EU chemical legislation and examines the shortcomings of some of the regulations in place with respect to dangerous chemicals. The Commission White Paper is discussed, and in particular, the REACH system which involves the registration, evaluation and authorisation of chemicals used in food-contact applications. The impact of the REACH system on food-contact plastic manufacturers is examined, with respect to suppliers of monomers and additives, plastic manufacturers, converters and packagers. [Pg.46]

The propylene equivalent of polyethylene is polypropylene. About 50% of the chemical use of propylene is directed to that use. Other major applications are the manufacture of propylene oxide, isopropyl alcohol, cumene, 0X0 alcohols, acrylic acids, and acrylonitrile. The consumer products you are familiar with show up everywhere carpets, rope, clothing, plastics in automobiles, appliances, toys, rubbing alcohol, paints, and epoxy glue. [Pg.84]

Hydrochloric acid (HCL) is also known as hydrogen chloride, and in a less than pure form it is commonly called muriatic acid. It is used by many industries and is mainly obtained as a by-product of the organic chloride chemicals used in the manufacturing of plastics. It can be produced in pure form by exploding a mixture of hydrogen and chlorine gases. The stomachs digestive juice is a form of hydrochloric acid. [Pg.45]

DNB is often made first. Both 1,3-DNB and 1,3,5-TNB are formed as by-products when another explosive, trinitrotoluene (TNT), is made. 1,3-DNB is also used to make certain dyes, as an intermediate in the synthesis of organic chemicals, and in the plastics manufacturing industry. 1,3,5-TNB is used in making rubber. Other names for 1,3-DNB include m-dinitrobenzene,... [Pg.14]

Uses. A high-production-volume chemical used in manufacture of epoxy-phenolic resins (protective linings for food and beverage cans) monomer for polycarbonate resins (used in food contact materials such as returnable beverage bottles, infant feeding bottles, plates, and mugs) antioxidant in PVC plastics inhibitor of end polymerization in PVC plastics... [Pg.85]

Uses. Reactive free radical-generating chemical used as a curing agent for unsaturated polyester resins hardening agent for fiberglass-reinforced plastics manufacture of acrylic... [Pg.478]

As aqueous solution, it is used as a parent compound for preparation of numerous chemicals used in industry, such.as in the manufacture of explosives, plastics, resins (eg phenol-formaldehyde resins) etc (See... [Pg.546]

About 60 percent of the sulfuric acid in turn is used for agricultural purposes, mainly in phosphoric acid production, and intermediate in fertilizer manufacture. Another important use of sulfuric acid is in petroleum refining. Chemical uses, including plastics, paper and paint, account for 8 percent of sulfur production, sulfuric acid again being a major outlet. Ferrous and non-ferrous metal production consumes 8 percent and miscellaneous uses add up to 18 percent. [Pg.85]

Vinyl chloride is a chemical used in the manufacture of plastics, which is carcinogenic and causes various toxic effects, including liver injury and damage to the bones and skin. Liver hemangiosarcomas are produced in animals and humans. Vinyl chloride undergoes metabolic activation by cytochrome P-450 to an epoxide, which may interact with DNA and form adducts (ethenodeoxyadenosine and ethenodeoxycytidine), which leads to mutations. These can be detected in white cells, and a mutant p21 ras protein can be detected in the serum of exposed workers. Also, reaction with GSH occurs. [Pg.393]

Electrochemistry finds wide application. In addition to industrial electrolytic processes, electroplating, and the manufacture and use of batteries already mentioned, the principles of electrochemistry are used in chemical analysis, e.g.. polarography, and electrometric or conductometric titrations in chemical synthesis, e.g., dyestuffs, fertilizers, plastics, insecticides in biolugy and medicine, e g., electrophoretic separation of proteins, membrane potentials in metallurgy, e.g.. corrosion prevention, eleclrorefining and in electricity, e.g., electrolytic rectifiers, electrolytic capacitors. [Pg.543]

Wood forms one of the world s most important chemical raw materials. It is the primary source of cellulose for the pulp and paper and cellulose industries. These industries are well up in the group of 10 major industries of the United Slates. For paper, rayon, films, lacquers, explosives and plastics, which comprise the greatest chemical uses of wood, it is the cellulose component (plus certain amounts of hemicellulose) of wood that is of value. The lignin forms a major industrial waste as a by-product of the paper and cellulose industries. Its major use is in its heat value in the recovery of alkaline pulping chemicals. A variety of minor uses for lignin have been developed, such as for the manufacture of vanillin, adhesives, plastics, oil-well drilling compounds and fillers for rubber. [Pg.1751]
