Efficient models of water heaters have thicker insulation, up to three inches thick, on some of the most efficient electric water heaters. Another means to increase efficiency is installing heat traps, or anti—convection devices, on the inlet and outlet pipes. Standard heat traps consist of short pipe nipple containing a small plastic ball. On the inlet side the ball is lighter than water and floats up to seal the inlet pipe. On the outlet side the ball is heavier than water and sinks against the seal. This prevents the heated... [Pg.1216]

Because of liquid hydrogen s extreme cold temperature, the equipment design must be of materials that have suitable properties for cold temperature operation. Vessels and piping are designed to ASME code and piping standards for the pressure and temperatures involved. [Pg.286]

Effective remedial actions are an important element in pipeline integrity and safety. They include repair, replacement, and relocation of pipe. Standard methods are used for repair of defects due to corrosion or outside force damage on pipelines. This includes line pipe, components, and pipe coatings. If the pipe is unsuited for repair, then replacement is made of appropriate lengths, which can range from a few feet to miles. In some cases, a solution to threats and potential adverse consequences is relocation. A new pipe is installed at a new location to deliver product between two specified points. [Pg.2188]

Shell and baffles. Shell diameters are standardized. For shells up to and including 23 in. the diameters are fixed in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) pipe standards. For sizes of 25 in. and above the inside diameter is specified to the nearest inch. These shells are constructed of rolled plate. Minimum shell thicknesses are also specified. [Pg.429]

In thick, high-volume PO applications such as extruded pipe, standard (20-pm) talcs provide effective stiffness. But finer talc grades may allow reduced resin use by allowing thinner parts with equivalent beam stiffness. Reduced talc particle sizes (near 1 pm), for instance, can create a better balance of properties in thinner parts to help justify increased filler cost that results from the use of very fine talcs. Lower talc loadings may also be possible the newest high-aspect-ratio talcs are said to create the same mechanical properties at 3%-7% loadings in PP than in PP compounds loaded with 20% standard talc. Cases 8.1 and 8.2 cover applications in which different talcs supply these different functional needs [7-10]. [Pg.128]

This method is accepted as the standard method to test PE pipes throughout Europe. The specific performance levels are detailed in the respective pipe standards (i.e., ISO 4427 for water and ISO 4437 for gas). Typically a minimum of 165 h is set for PE pipe materials. [Pg.1171]

As the grooved feed/barrier screw arrangement has been established for the extrusion of water and gas pipes where mechanical properties must meet well regulated pipe standards, the disadvantage discovered in the above film trials are not likely to be universal. However, the film trials emphasise the need to establish that physical properties necessary for the application are met, before accepting new technology in production plant. [Pg.129]

A turbine mixing head patented by ICI in 1955 [1, 2] enabled polyethylene pipe manufacturers to meet appropriate pipe standards when feeding pellet blends of natural polyethylene and carbon black masterbatch into the pipe extruder. Until then it was necessary to use the more expensive pre-compounded material. The turbine mixers were used by at least two large polyethylene pipe producers until being superseded by CTM, and at a later date, becoming unnecessary in some cases when price distortions and the polymer supply situation produced a switch back to extrusion of pre-compounded materials. [Pg.168]

Although the turbine mixer produced the mixing required to meet polyethylene water pipe standards, problems could arise from two inherent features of the arrangement. [Pg.171]

Many piping standards still reference the older type and grade designation system. To assist in the conversion, new releases of ASTM D 1784 include a table (see Table 2.5) that cross-references the older with the new cell classifications. [Pg.15]

Requirements for acetone testing were later included in seventeen ASTM PVC piping standards. D2152 testing was also included in PVC pipe standards published by organizations such as the American Water Works Association (AWWA) [/], Underwriters Laboratories (UL) [2], and the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE) [3]. [Pg.198]

There are three ASTM pipe standards that do not include acetone testing (D2665, F480, and FI 760). None of these standards appear to have suffered as a resitlt of this omission. [Pg.204]

Pipe routing and sizing is dramatically different in this revision as estimated bend radii are satisfied for increased accuracy of the model. The suggested minimum bend radius is three times the outer diameter due to manufacturability concerns, ovalization issues, and cold working the pipe and to reduce head losses in the pipe, (Standard short radii used in this revision are equal to the outer... [Pg.132]
