Shipment, Stora.ge, ndPrice. l-Methyl-2-pyrrohdinone is available in tank cars or tank trailers as well as in dmms. Shipping containers are normally of unlined steel. Rubber hose is unsuitable for handling standard steel pipe or braided steel hose is acceptable. Ordinarily 1020 carbon steel (0550) is satisfactory as a storage material. Stainless-steel 304 and 316, nickel, and aluminum are also suitable. MethylpyrroHdinone is hygroscopic and must be protected from atmospheric moisture. In September 1994, NMP was Hsted at 3.89/kg. [Pg.363]

Materials of Construction for Bulk Transport Because of the more severe service, construction materials for transportation usually are more restricted than for storage. Most large pipe lines are constructed of steel conforming to API Specification 5L or 5LX. Most tanks (cars, etc.) are built or pressure-vessel steels or AAR specification steels, with a few of aluminum or stainless steel. Carbon steel tanks may be hned with rubber, plastic, nickel, glass, or other materials. In many cases this is practic and cheaper than using a stainless-steel tank. Other materials for tank construction may be proposed and used if approved by the appropriate authorities (AAR and DOT). [Pg.1022]

Thermal insulators comprise an equally broad range of materials. Such inorganics as mineral fibers, magnesia, aluminum silicate, cellulose, and glass fibers are widely used for steam and hot-water pipes, furnaces, and blown-in home insulation. Organic products that are effective include plastic foams (polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene) and cellular rubber. There are a number of materials that may be called double insulators, since they have both electrical and thermal insulating properties,... [Pg.691]

For the sake of consistency, a terminology has developed within the atmospheric corrosion testing community with respect to testing. The test facility itself is commonly referred to as a corrosion yard. Racks, commonly fabricated from pipe or wood, are installed to hold the fixtures for the individual test specimens. The latter are referred to as "frames," and can be fabricated from wood or metal (nickel-copper alloy, stainless steel, aluminum, etc.). These frames are usually designed to hold approximately 75 specimens, isolated from each other and the test frame by porcelain, plastic, or rubber insulators." Thus, a corrosion yard... [Pg.344]

WAX. In laboratory tests, many waxes were protective to aluminum alloy s. Steam traced aluminum alloy piping has been used to handle liquid and molten waxes. Molten waxes have been soHdifted in aluminum alloy pans. Aluminum alloy dip tanks have been used to treat crude rubber with molten wax. See also Ref (I) p. 147. (3) pp. 220, 225. [Pg.629]

Machinery and equipment. Aluminum is used in processing equipment in the petroleum industry such as aluminum tops for steel storage tanks and aluminum pipelines for carrying petroleum products. It is also used in the rubber industry because it resists all corrosion that occurs in rubber processing and is nonadhesive. Aluminum alloys are widely used in the manufacture of explosives because of their nonpyrophoric characteristics. Aluminum is used in textile machinery and equipment, paper and printing industries, coal mine machinery, portable irrigation pipe and tools, jigs, fixtures and patterns, and many instruments. [Pg.598]

Rubber, neoprene, plastic, aluminum, brass, and other low melting point materials should not be used for hydraulic or lube oil piping. A small fire near these materials will cause them to fail quickly with the potential to release large volumes of oil into the fire. [Pg.288]
