Steel storage tanks

Plasticizer esters are relatively iaert, thermally stable Hquids with high flash points and low volatihty. Consequently they can be stored safely ia mild steel storage tanks or dmms for extended periods of time. Exposure to high temperatures for extended periods, as encountered ia dmms ia hot climates, is not recommended since it may lead to a deterioration in product quaUty with respect to color, odor, and electrical resistance. 

Anodic passivation and its appHcation to sulfuric acid equipment such as stainless steel acid coolers and carbon steel storage tanks has been weU studied (102—104). More recently, sheU and tube coolers made from Sandvik SX or Saramet have been installed in several acid plants. These materials do not requHe anodic protection. 

Contrac tors bids offer the most rehable information on cost. Order-of-magnitude costs, however, may be required for preliminary studies. One way of estimating them is to obtain cost information from similar facihties and scale it to the proposed installation. Costs of steel storage tanks and vessels have been found to vaiy approximately as the 0.6 to 0.7 power of their weight [see Happel, Chemical Process Economics, Wiley, 1958, p. 267 also Williams, Chem. Eng., 54(12), 124 (1947)]. AU estimates cased on the costs of existing eqiiipment must be corrected for changes in the price index from the date when the equipment was built. Considerable uncertainty is involved in adjusting data more than a few years old.

The relative cost of equipment made from different materials will depend on the cost of fabrication, as well as the basic cost of the material. Unless a particular material requires special fabrication techniques, the relative cost of the finished equipment will be lower than the relative bare material cost. For example the purchased cost of a stainless-steel storage tank will be 2 to 3 times the cost of the same tank in carbon steel, whereas the relative cost of the metals is between 5 to 8. 

The National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE International) has developed the following to protect the soil side of bottoms of on-grade carbon-steel storage tanks NACE RP0193-01, Standard Recommended Practice—External Cathodic Protection of On-Grade MetaUic Storage Tank Bottoms.

Transfer the suspension through 630 micron sieve after mixing for 5 minutes at 18-20 rpm, temperature NMT 25°C, to the stainless steel storage tank. 

Check pH (range 2.0 to 4.0). Filter the solution through a 100-mesh nylon cloth and transfer to a stainless steel storage tank.

Presence of traces of chloride ion in technical 75% phosphoric acid in a closed stainless steel storage tank caused corrosion and liberation of hydrogen which later exploded at a sparking contact [1], Steel dmms (presumably mild steel) into which phosphoric acid had been transferred, pressurised and burst within a day [2]. 

Many vertical low-pressure storage tanks containing flammable or combustible liquids are designed with a weak weld seam on the wall-to-roof connection. This loss prevention feature allows the roof to separate and peel back if an internal fire, an internal explosion, or just a pneumatic overpressure situation occurs within the tank. If the roof relieves or is blown off, the liquid is still contained within the walls if these tanks are properly designed and fabricated. Hydrochloric acid is stored in rubber lined steel storage tanks and shipped in rubber lined tank cars, pot cars or glass carboys. The following commercial grades of hydrochloric acid are known synthetic hydrochloric acid which is prepared by the reaction of hydrogen with chlorine sulphate acid obtained as a by-product in the manufacture of sodium sulphate hydrochloric acid used in the foodstuff industry and finally chemically pure hydrochloric acid.

Cost of large-volume carbon-steel storage tanks. 

A spherical carbon-steel storage tank has an inside diameter of 30 ft. All joints are butt-welded with backing strip. If the tank is to be used at a working pressure of 30 psig and a temperature of 80°F, estimate the necessary wall thickness. No corrosion allowance is necessary.
