The great importance of minerals in prebiotic chemical reactions is undisputed. Interactions between mineral surfaces and organic molecules, and their influence on self-organisation processes, have been the subject of much study. New results from Szostak and co-workers show that the formation of vesicles is not limited to one type of mineral, but can involve various types of surfaces. Different minerals were studied in order to find out how particle size, particle shape, composition and charge can influence vesicle formation. Thus, for example, montmorillonite (Na and K10), kaolinite, talc, aluminium silicates, quartz, perlite, pyrite, hydrotalcite and Teflon particles were studied. Vesicle formation was catalysed best by aluminium solicate, followed by hydrotalcite, kaolinite and talcum (Hanczyc et al., 2007). [Pg.273]

Filtration. Filtration can include filter presses, rotary drum vacuum filters (RDVF), belt filters, and variations on synthetic membrane filtration equipment, such as filter cartridges, pancake filters, or plate and frame filter presses. These processes typically operate in a batch mode when the filter chamber is filled up or the vacuum drum cake is exhausted, a new batch must be started. This type of filtration is also called dead-end filtration because the only fluid flow is through the membrane itself. Due to the small size of cells and their compressible nature, typical cell cakes have low permeability and filter aids, such as diatomaceous earths, perlite, or other mined materials are added to overcome this limitation. Moreover, the presence of high solids and viscous polymeric fermentation byproducts can limit filtration fluxes without the use of filter aids. [Pg.1331]

As discussed in previous sections, it is important to minimize the heat leak into the cryogenic section of the ASU. This is accomplished by containing the equipment in an insulated enclosure termed a coldbox. The coldbox is a structural steel frame which is paneled with metal sheeting and provides structural support for the equipment and also containment for the insulation. There are essentially two different types of insulation material used in ASUs. The first and most popular is perlite. The perlite coldboxes are insulated in the field with perlite blown in from the top of the coldbox. The second insulation material is rock wool. Rock wool has to be packed manually. [Pg.127]

In depth filtration a thick layer of porous material with irregular channels is used. A depth filter can be a pad made of thick nonwoven fabric, or a cake of filter aid type. Depth filters may retain particles down to about 1 pm [72] and do not blind as easily as absolute filters because they have a greater filtering area. Diatomaceous earth, or perlite is used as inert powders in depth filters. Active absorbents are also incorporated in filter pads, e.g., bonded on refined cellulose fibers [74]. [Pg.1202]

The most common filter aid employed is kieselguhr (diatomaceous earth). This comprises the fossils or skeletons of fresh or salt water algae known as diatoms (Figure 11.1). The highly porous nature of the particles enables effective liquid flow but also entrapment of particles. Other types of filter aid that are commonly used include perlite (volcanic glass) and cellulose fibres. Bleach Filtration. The discussion of brine treatment in Section 7.5 covered the characteristics of the particles formed by chemical precipitation and the types of filter used to remove them. As that discussion would indicate, the particles found in bleach solutions are not easy to filter. Filter aids are necessary, and pressure-leaf filters are commonly used. Figure 15.17 shows a typical skid-mounted unit. Pumps and bleach filter bodies and plates should be titanium. Nonmetallic components are PVC or PTFE.
