Installing and updating drivers for peripheral hardware is covered in Chapter 16, and updating current drivers is covered later in this chapter. [Pg.542]

Adapter The adapter is technically the peripheral hardware that installs into your computer, but in this case, it refers to the software that defines how the computer talks to that hardware. If you do not have the proper adapter software installed, your PC will not be able to talk properly to the NIC and you will not be able to access the network until you change the adapter to one that is compatible with the hardware. It is often best to simply think of an adapter as a network driver, which is what it is. A long list of adapters are supported by Windows 95, and Windows 98 supports even more, with support for more recent hardware. Adapter drivers can also be downloaded from most NIC vendors Web sites. [Pg.725]

Lead has been used in var3ring amounts electronic assemblies since their inception. Lead is utilized in the body of some electronic components such as capacitors (lead titanate, lead zirconate), in their interconnections that provide both an electrical pathway and method of attachment to a component carrier, and as a protective finish on the printed circuit boards (PCBs) and component leads. It is also found in peripheral hardware such as batteries, monitors, cables, power supphes, motors, etc. In changing over to lead-free technology, there are several other important considerations aside from just the eUmination of elemental lead (Pb) from components or an assembly. For example, one has to consider the mechanical implications of the alloy replacement... [Pg.591]

Unauthorized interference with computer hardware is usually difficult, but interference with peripheral equipment may be more serious than on a traditional plant, as the computer will not know that interference has occurred. For example, the leads on a limit switch on a valve were interchanged to carry out some tests. The plant was on manual control at the time but was switched back to computer control before the leads were restored to their coirect positions. The computer thought the valve was open (when it was shut) and elected to close it. It actually opened it, releasing flammable material [2]. [Pg.362]

The system is based on an XP Zymate laboratory robot controlled with a 10 slot System V controller using software version XP VI.S2. The system incorporates commerdaUy available hardware, as well as custom hardware. A schematic diagram of the system is shown in Fig. 6.11. The robotic arm and the peripheral laboratory stations that the robotic arm interacts with to perform the appHcation are positioned in a circular configuration. The GC/MS is located adjacent to the bench top, such that the injection valve is close to the sipper station. Peripheral items of hardware with which the robotic arm does not directly interact with are outside the working envelope. [Pg.189]

The following process is applicable for changes to any component of computer technology that performs functions on regulated products, including hardware, peripheral devices, system software and utilities, application software, documentation, and communications hardware and software. These components can be either purchased from an external supplier or developed in house by the company or its designee. [Pg.98]

From the numerous and partly new functional principles as discussed in previous sections the number and complexity of the peripheral components needed to operate the PIMMS can be estimated. Besides the PIMMS-chip itself and the environment providing an appropriate vacuum the electronic hardware is another very important parameter, which determines the cost and size of the device. As the many subsystems of the spectrometer and their interactions are not standard, in many respects completely new electronic has to be generated to drive the system and read and evaluate the measurements, respectively. To allow real-time applications, such as online control, several hardware components have to work independently from a central controller, which is another challenge for the firmware and software implementation. This section presents an overview on present state of the hardware, firmware, and software infrastructure for the PIMMS and will outline the further steps for industrialization. [Pg.445]

This range of vendor-to-user responsibility is an essential consideration for making an informed hardware choice. There are choices available for both controllers and the functions within them. The fundamental set of requirements involve speed, scale, packaging, reliability, and peripherals. These requirements must be satisfied before successfully applying any control system technology. [Pg.184]

All quality systems need to demonstrate that the equipment used is properly maintained and in some instanees ealibrated. Computers are no exception to this. Therefore, records of the maintenance of the CDS need to be set up and updated in line with the work carried out on it. The main emphasis of the maintenance records is toward the physical components of a system hardware, networking, and peripherals. The software maintenance is covered imder the error logging system described above. [Pg.497]

All types of computer hardware and software are used for Internet communication. Because these are typically used in regulated environments, we could assume that all such computer hardware, peripheral devices, and software should be validated. However, because of the nature of the Internet this is umealistic. [Pg.904]
