Chemical-Illnet newsgroup is an Internet community where the chemically ill, friends and family can get information and support and learn how to become proactively involved in advocating for accommodation and acceptance of MCS. Andi DesJardins, list owner, has a Web page at http //www.herc.org/. There is a link in the drop down menu to Newsgroups. Subscription information also available by going to The Gathering Place at http //www.herc. [Pg.277]

To ensure that students generate reliable and publishable data, CASPiE has developed a network of instruments that can be accessed and controlled remotely over the Internet. If the necessary instruments are not available on their own campuses, students mail their samples to the instrument site and can then log in to set the parameters and run the experiment themselves. Data are continually updated by students at participating institutions via a database and internet communication. [Pg.195]

The Internet by its nature is an insecure and unreliable environment and therefore without special precautions is not compliant with the above-mentioned requirements. For example, the TCP/IP Internet communication protocol was not originally designed to accommodate security commands. Almost daily we hear in the news about hackers, viruses, scam artists, and on-line predators. For example, the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) published a 27-page report about the top ten Web application security vulnerabilities. They include ... [Pg.898]

All types of computer hardware and software are used for Internet communication. Because these are typically used in regulated environments, we could assume that all such computer hardware, peripheral devices, and software should be validated. However, because of the nature of the Internet this is umealistic. [Pg.904]

Validation of both the source and destination computing systems (i.e., both ends of the Internet communications pipeline) should extend to those measures. We therefore consider it extremely important that those measures are fully documented as part of the system requirements specifications so they can be validated. [Pg.904]

Interestingly, the Internet (a major computer network linking millions of machines around the world) is growing at a phenomenal rate. Between January 1993 and January 1994, the number of connected machines grew from 1,313,000 to 2,217,000. More than 70 countries have full Internet connectivity, and about 150 have at least some electronic mail services. As I write this, there are about 20 to 25 million users of the Internet (Goodman et al The Global Diffusion of the Internet, Communications of the ACM, 37[8][1994] 27). [Pg.317]

The Internet-based economy is multilayered. It can be divided into several layers that help us in grasping the nature of the new economy. Barua et al. (1999) have identified four layers of the Internet economy in their measurement of the Internet economy indicators. The first two, Internet infrastructure and Internet applications layers, together represent the IP or Internet communications network infrastructure. These layers provide the basic technological foundation for Internet, intranet, and extranet applications. The intermediary/market maker layer fadlitates the meeting and interaction of buyers and sellers over the Internet. Through this layer, investments in the infrastructure and applications layers are transformed into business transactions. The Internet commerce layer involves the sales of products and services to consumers or businesses. According to their measurements, the Internet economy generated an estimated 301 billion in U.S. revenues and created 1.2 million jobs in 1998. Estimates of revenues and jobs contributions by each layer are presented in Table 1. [Pg.260]

With the availability of Internet communications and the advent of tools similar to those noted above, tool sets such as these should be readily available for use by project teams. [Pg.1260]

Internet An internet is a collection of networks connected together. The Internet is a global collection of interlinked networks. Computers connected to the Internet communicate via the Internet Protocol (IP). [Pg.339]

As collaboration succeeds and technology is used as a key improvement tool, the linked firms move into an industry leadership position where a value chain constellation begins to form. This entity is a set of firms cooperating as an extended enterprise to dominate a particular market or industry by virtue of having the delivery system of choice in the eyes of the desired business customer. Now the firm is part of a constellation of companies that represent the end-to-end value chain, with all of its complexities understood and under an overall improvement effort. Firms in this level look seriously at supply chain outsourcing to find the most capable constituent for process steps. E-procurement systems are in place and supporting Internet communication systems link the partners. [Pg.12]

New calculation techniques become accessible at once to every member of the Internet community. We should only inform the possible users of correspraident IP-address. To turn the calculations into the article we can administrate, make it paid (partially paid, reasonably paid), place banners round the references. [Pg.276]

The remaining problem is key distribution, how to get the sender and receiver to agree on the random sequence of bits to be used. Modern methods, the ones used for encryption of Internet communications for instance, all rely on so-called... [Pg.93]
