Pavement abrasion

In Scandinavian countries road dust emissions generate large quantities of coarse particles by enhanced pavement abrasion and mechanical fragmentation of traction sand grains [126-130]. [Pg.179]

Abrasion and erosion. The dust-loaded wind has an erosive action and contributes to a physical disintegration of rock surfaces or to a polishing of the components of the desert pavement, giving them a characteristic patina desert varnish) and shape (ventifacts). [Pg.30]

Deicing. All forms of calcium chloride are used in conjunction with other products to deice pavement, driveways, and sidewalks. Anhydrous, 94—97 wt % calcium chloride pellets and 77—80 wt % calcium chloride flakes are used for highway deicing and in institutional and consumer markets. Calcium chloride solutions of 28—32 wt % concentration are used for prewetting rock salt or abrasives such as sand or cinders before spreading on highways. Solutions of 42—45 wt % concentration are also used to pretreat stockpiles of these materials. Calcium chloride is the deicer of choice for use at... [Pg.416]

OTHER COMMENTS used as an abrasive for cutting and grinding metals used in polishing glass and granite utilized in the manufacture of porcelain, shoe soles, refractor brick, emery paper, and furnace linings used in anti-skid pavements useful in semiconductor technology. [Pg.901]

Additionally to these combustion derived emissions a motor vehicle also produces so called non-tailpipe emissions, which result from wearing of tires and brakes (Rogge et al. 1993 Garg et al. 2000), abrasion of road pavement (Kupiainen et al. 2005) and from the resuspension of road dust churned up by cars (Nicholson et al. 1989 Sternbeck et al. 2002 Rogge et al. 1993). Though brake and tire wear are... [Pg.64]

In some HPC application the abrasion resistance is important. The important studies and field experiments carried out by Gjorv et al. [23] contribute much to this question. The authors examined abrasion on the specially made highway pavement exposed to heavy traffic with studded tyres. The results are shown in Fig. 10.3. [Pg.666]

Czamecki and Lukowski [61] mention the acryl polymers added at p/c=0.1, which provide the better abrasion resistance, important for bridge pavements and industrial floors and improve the other properties typical for these polymer-cement concretes. The authors [61] mention also the epoxy-cement concrete, the only practically used composite, in which the polymer structural hardening occurs simultaneously with cement hydration [61]. [Pg.674]

Several sintered glass and glass-ceramic matrix composites obtained from recycled silicate waste have been reported in the literature [100-106]. These are dense or porous products with potential application as building, decoration or architectural materials, such as wall partition blocks, pavements, wall and floor tiles, thermal insulation, fire protection elements, roofing granules and acoustic tiles. Other possible uses include abrasive media for blasting and polishing applications. [Pg.491]

The test method measures the resistance to ravelling characteristics of cold asphalts with or without recycled asphalt pavement (reclaimed asphalt) by simulating an abrasion similar to early return to traffic. [Pg.303]

Slippery surface may result from polishing and abrasion of the surface aggregate or asphalt bleeding. Both factors reduce the macro- and micro-texture of the pavement surface and the surface skid resistance provided. [Pg.654]

When the wind is armed with grains of sand, it possesses great erosive force, the effects of which are best displayed in rock deserts. Accordingly, any surface subjected to prolonged attack by wind-blown sand is polished, etched or fluted. Abrasion has a selective action, picking out the weaknesses in rocks. For example, discontinuities are opened and rock pinnacles developed. Since the heaviest rock particles are transported near to the ground, abrasion is there at its maximum and rock pedestals may be formed. In deserts, flat smoothed surfaces produced by wind erosion are termed desert pavements. [Pg.128]

Fabric/material Pounds of force until fabric tears Abrasion cycles on pavement until fabric fails... [Pg.106]

Abrasion and skid resistance of an aggregate are essential when the aggregate is to be used in concrete constantly subject to abrasion as in heavy-duty floors or pavements. Different minerals in the aggregate wear and polish at different rates. Harder aggregate can be selected in highly abrasive conditions to minimize wear. [Pg.975]

In road pavements, high performance concrete with carefully selected aggregate and compressive strength up to 135 MPa exhibited a level of abrasion resistance from studded tyres similar to massive granite. According to laboratory tests, this concrete may last four times longer than traditional concrete of 55 MPa. The addition of a small amount of steel and polypropylene fibres improves crack control in elements reinforced with traditional steel bars, for example, in deep beams where steel fibres partly replace stir-... [Pg.502]

Plastics and elastomers are frequently used for wheels for a variety of consumer products. Everything from in-line skates to barbecue grills, to strollers, use plastic wheels. How do various plastics resist abrasion from contact with concrete pavement Erosion of plastics is a factor in dishwashers, plumbing systems, fans, and pumps. Most domestic sump pumps are now made from plastics and in use they are required to carry sand-filled water from basement drain crocks. How do various plastics resist this type of wear ... [Pg.385]
