Glass polishing

Zirconium oxide increases the refractive index of some optical glasses, and is used for dispersion hardening of platinum and mthenium. Very fine zirconium oxide has been used for polishing glass but ceria seems to be preferred.

Cavitation damage in the complete absence of corrosion has been demonstrated (e.g., roughening of polished glass in cavitating distilled water). However, in industrial situations it is highly probable that corrosion is a common contributing factor. 

The shape of the maser curve not only depends on the rubber compound, but also on the surface on which it slides. On dry, clean polished glass the friction master curve for gum rubbers rises from very small values at low log ajv to a maximum which may reach friction coefficients of more than 3 and falls at high log ajv to values which are normally associated with hard materials, i.e., 0.3 shown for an ABR gum compound in Figure 26.2. If the position of the maximum on the log a-fV axis for different gum rubbers is compared with that of their maximum log E frequency curves, a constant length A = 6 X 10 m results which is of molecular dimension, indicating that this is an adhesion process [10]. 

The use of aluminum-based masks in photolithography has been proposed.347 According to the scheme employed, aluminum is deposited onto a polished glass sheet. The regions of the mask that should be light transparent are then converted into porous oxide. As the operation of aluminum anodization exhibits a much better vertical anisotropy than chemical etching, the masks obtained reproduce the parameters of standard masks more precisely than the chromium masks usually used. 

Some rare earth compounds are used in glassmaking. Cerium is the most abundant, and its compounds are used to polish glass. Lanthanum compounds are used in making glass lenses, and praseodymium compounds color glass green.

Add the cut tubing to the sodium bicarbonate/EDTA solution and heat to 90°C for 30 min. Stir the tubing periodically with a polished glass rod (see Note 11). Rinse the tubing well with several changes of deionized water. Store tubing in 20% ethanol at 4°C until needed.

Recently Deryagin and Zorin (251), by optical means, investigated the adsorption of alcohols, water, benzene, nitrobenzene, and other gases on an optically polished glass surface. Multimolecular adsorption did not occur until the relative vapor pressure was higher than 0.95. 

For mechanically polished glass plates, thermal annealing should be performed before etching to improve etch quality [96,102,105,109,430,529].
