With the advent of high-performance concrete and the development of third-generation (mostly acrylic polymer-based) superplasticizers which provide significantly higher water reduction at flowable consistencies, this demarcation has blurred. Through the use of a mixture of admixtures it is now possible to obtain highly durable low water-cement ratio concretes that are nearly self-leveling and yet quite cohesive. 

For high-performance concrete, the effect of MSA is not significant. Some researchers claim that a smaller aggregate size is preferable. 

Modem high-performance concretes (such as non-dispersible underwater concrete, self-compacting concrete, and concretes used at below freezing temperatures) have necessitated the use of special admixtures, often requiring on-site addition. Figure 7.57 shows a special dispensing unit with storage tank used for this purpose.

Concretes that were previously (late 1970s) known as high-strength concretes are now referred to as high-performance concretes. Because it has basically zero water absorption, it is one of the most durable materials known to man. With the current emphasis on durability of high-performance concrete, it is only natural to rely on extremely durable ingredients.
