The chemical shifts for P—F compounds have been reviewed.The compounds differ from most other organophosphorus compounds because Sp becomes more positive as the electronegativity of the atoms attached to phosphorus increases. The effect is at a maximum for P" compounds. They behave normally with regard to an increase in shielding with increase in co-ordination number and therefore the P" compounds are the least shielded. Thus the largest negative values (— 190 to — 250) are observed for compounds of the type YPFj. With the new value of Sp of + 80 for PFg, the variation of Sp with the number of fluorine atoms in P compounds is now shown to be fairly consistent. The use of SPE with porous materials such as alumina, diatomaceous earth, Horisil and silica for the cleanup of fat-soluble organochlorine pesticides in fatty foods such as meat, flsh, shellfish, milk and vegetable oils has been well documented. SFE. SFE has been established as the extraction method of choice for solid samples. The usefulness of SFE for soil samples has been demonstrated for carbamate,organophosphorus and organochlorine pesticides. However, SFE is more effective in extracting nonpolar than polar residues. In order to obtain a greater extraction efficiency for the polar residues of imidacloprid, the addition of 20% methanol as modifier is required. Extraction at 276 bar and 80 °C with a solvent consisting of supercritical carbon dioxide modified with methanol (5%) for 40 min gives a recovery of 97% (RSD = 3.6%, n = 10). A potentiation of neuropathy has been observed in studies involving administration of -hexane or methyl -butyl ketone with O-ethyl-O-4-nitrophenyl phenylphosphonothioate (EPN) (Abou-Donia 1983 Abou-Doniaetal. 1985). Administration of each compound individually resulted in peripheral neuropathy. The peripheral neuropathy observed when /7-hexane or methyl n-butyl ketone was administered simultaneously with EPN was more severe and had an earlier onset (Abou-Donia et al. 1985). The potential interactive effect of multiple exposures to different organophosphorus pesticides on delayed neuropathy has not been characterized (Chemiack 1988). [Pg.228]
