Oregano herb

Essential oils from oregano herb (0. onite, laurel leaf (Lauras nobili, sage leaf (Salvia fruticosa), fennel fruit (Eoeniculum vulgare), myrtle leaf (JHyrtus communi , and citrus peel (rich in limonene) were mixed and formulated as feed additive after encapsulation. It is marketed in Turkey as poultry feed under the name Herbromix. [Pg.662]

Negative atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APC) low-energy collision activation mss spectrometry has also been employed for the characterization of flavonoids in extracts of fresh herbs. Besides the separation, quantitative determination and identification of flavonoids, the objective of the study was the comparison of the efficacy of the various detection systems in the analysis of flavonoids in herb extracts. Freeze-dried herbs (0.5g of chives, cress, dill, lovage, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary, tarragon and thyme) were ground and extracted with 20 ml of 62.5 per cent aqueous methanol. After sedimentation the suspension was filtered and used for HPLC analyses. Separations were carried out in an... [Pg.170]

SALVIA DIVINORUM IS A MEMBER of the mint family which also includes such familiar herbs as oregano and basil. There are dozens of Salvia species, but Salvia divinorum is the only one known to contain the psychoactive diterpenes salvinorin A (at 96%) and salvinorin B (at 4%). Salvia has hollow, square stems with winged edges. The stems are not very sturdy, but with support, the plant can grow to eight feet tall. [Pg.482]

The mint family is sometimes called the Lamiaceae. It consists chiefly of cosmopolitan herbs prominent in the area from the Mediterranean to central Asia. The mints have long been used in medicine, as spices, and in some perfumes. They are familiar kitchen herbs (mint, basil, oregano, etc.). Many are cultivated as ornamentals. [Pg.110]

PCP is easy and cheap to manufacture but not very popular, so it is often sold as another drug. Most often, it is sold on the street as THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. In fact, real THC is almost impossible to obtain on the street. PCP might also be sprayed or sprinkled on oregano, parsley, or another herb and sold as marijuana. Alternatively, lower quality marijuana might be laced with PCP to make it seem more potent. Other drugs that PCP is sold as include LSD, cannabinol, mescaline, psilocybin, amphetamine, methamphetamine, peyote, cocaine, Hawaiian woodrose, and other psychedelics. In... [Pg.409]

Oregano Origanum virens L. is an perennial herb with 40-70 cm high and very aromatic. This plant grows in open and dry countries, at altitudes lower than 500-700 m. The major components of essential oil from Origanum virens L. are terpineol, a-pinene, camphor, thymol, carvacrol and cineole. Compounds such as alcohols and dipentene are also present. [Pg.526]

Oregano is a hardy (Zone 5) perennial herb grown for its aromatic leaves. Start oregano from cuttings or plants rather than from seed. Seedlings are quite variable and may have very little flavor. Oregano does best in... [Pg.160]

Oregano is usually quite trouble-free. Pale, stippled, or bronzed leaves are caused by mites—tiny, spiderlike creatures that thrive in hot, dry weather. Control them with insecticidal soap spray. See the Herbs entry beginning on page 116 for other possible problems. [Pg.160]

Experience has shown that freeze drying results in qualitatively superior products when compared to other drying and preservation methods. Herbs such as basil, chervil, dill, parsley, garlic, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, sage, tarragon, thyme and watercress are especially suitable. Economical reasons can also play a role. Freeze-dried products are, in contrast to fresh produce, constantly available all year round at rather stable prices ]27],... [Pg.114]

In the Labiatae family there are herbs such as Balm, Basil, Catnip, Hyssop, Lavender, Marjoram, Mints, Oregano, Pennyroyal, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme, etc., and these have typical square stems, simple leaves and, among the leaves, two-lipped flowers that grow in whorls. [Pg.17]

DHS applications have been developed, for example, for the determination of aroma-active compounds in bamboo shoots (83), styrene in yoghurt (8- ) and volatile acids in tobacco, tea, and coffee (88), volatile compounds of strawberries (89) and odor-active compounds of hams (90). The applications of DTD-GC include, for example, in the determination of volatile components of Lavandula luisieri (85), in the analysis of volatile components of oak wood (87) and volatiles in various solid-food products such as spices and herbs (black pepper, oregano, basil, garlic), coffee, roasted peanuts, candy and mushrooms (82). [Pg.119]

A problem that occurs now and then is that a producer of herbs partially extracts them, separates the components, sells them separately, and then sells the partially extracted leaves as originals. This is a fraud, unless the label indicates a partial extraction. An activist group suspects that such an operation is going on involving the removal of carvacrol and thymol from oregano leaves and demands an immediate analysis. You are to extract some leaves they suspect and compare the amount recovered to a known quality product. [Pg.551]

Spices and herbs have been used for centuries to mask unpleasant tastes and odors and to slow down spoilage. It has been found that sage, cloves, oregano, rosemary, and thyme prevent peroxide formation. Food chemists have found that they can synthesize compounds that work more effectively, cost less, are of known purity, and are free of insect contamination. Those compounds used most often are butylated hydroxy anisole (BHA), butylated hydroxy toluene (BHT), and propylgallate shown below. [Pg.591]

In salads or in cooking, olive oil is usually mixed with herbs and spices, which are also important elements of the Mediterranean diet. Herbs like oregano, rosemary, or thyme and others from the plants of the Lamiaceae family are rich sources of phenolic compounds with strong antioxidant activity (Nakatami 1994, Tsimidou and Boskou 1994, Antoun and Tsimidou 1997, Exarchou el al. 2001). These herbs maintain the nutritional value of the food and enhance the shelf life of the food product. [Pg.274]

Good herbs for oils are thyme, oregano, sage, fennel, basil, and rosemary. Infused oils have the potential to support the growth of harmful bacteria, so follow the procedures listed carefully. [Pg.36]

Terpineol, or more strictly, a-terpineol (3.38), is one of the most widespread of monocyclic monoterpenoid alcohols in nature. It is found in flowers such as narcissus and freesia herbs such as sage, marjoram, oregano and rosemary in the leaf oil of Ti-tree Melaleuca alternifolia) and in the oil expressed from the peel of lemons. Reports of the level of terpineol in oils occasionally vary considerably and one wonders how much this is due to variations in the plants and to variations in the isolation process since terpineol could be an artefact. The layman will often describe the odour of terpineol as pine disinfectant since terpineol is, in fact a major component of pine disinfectant. This product is prepared by distillation of turpentine in the presence of acid which results in opening of the ring of a-pinene (3.37) to produce a-terpineol as shown in Figure 3.19. [Pg.62]

Extracts derived from most members of the Labiatae family (Table 3) have the potential to reduce the oxidation of food products and extend shelf life. This antioxidant action is dependent on the ability of the constituent phenolics to scavenge free radicals and chelate metals [27]. This dual effect has implications for CHD since it has been proposed in some studies, mainly from Europe, that a high status of iron increases the risk of CHD [28]. A number of the active compounds found in rosemary have also been found in sage and other herbs. In oregano, four flavonoids were identified among the active fraction [29], while in thyme, dimers of thymol and flavonoids have been isolated and characterized. [Pg.222]

Some of the most powerful traditional blends of spices are chili powder (capsicums, onion, paprika, garlic, cumin, oregano), five-spice powder (white or black pepper, cinnamon, anise, fennel, cloves), salsa (capsicums, onion, garlic, tomatoes, lime), and curry powder (tumeric [a potent antibacterial antifungal, antiparasitic, and antiviral herb], curry leaves [a potent antiamebic, antimalarial, and antidiarrheal herb], cumin, cardamom, ginger, mustard, coriander). [Pg.77]
