Operations academy programs

Over the last twenty years, significant research and development has been performed concerning the ultimate disposal mechanism for radioactive waste. In 1957, the National Academy of Sciences recommended that deep beds of bedded salt be considered as potential locations for the disposal of radioactive waste materials. Following this recommendation a program of research and development was undertaken by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEG) to explore this approach. The high point of this program was the operation of Project Salt Vault in an abandoned salt mine in Lyons, Kansas. 

Chemical Abstracts operates an extensive exchange program of its own with the USSR Academy of Sciences and the Lenin State Library, and is about to enlarge it. Chemical Abstracts also receives a goodly number of Soviet publications through the good offices of the Department of State and by direct subscription. 

Although many of the training programs focus on practicing pharmacists, pharmacy students have also become active in advocating immunizations. Students in all 81 APhA Academy of Students of Pharmacy chapters and 40 Student National Pharmaceutical Association chapters have been involved with Operation Immunization The Nation s Pharmacy Students and Practitioners Protecting the Public Health. Since its inception in 1997, Operation Immunization has helped provide more than 125,000 vaccinations. 

The National Science Resources Center Is operated by the Smithsonian Institution and the National Academy of Sciences to Improve the teaching of science in the nation s schools. The NSRC collects and disseminates information about exemplary teaching resources, develops and disseminates curriculum materials, and sponsors outreach activities, specifically in the areas of leadership development and technical assistance, to help school districts develop and sustain hands-on science programs. The NSRC is located In the Arts and Industries Building of the Smithsonian Institution and in the Capital Gallery Building In Washington, D.C. 

The National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) will identity the scientific and technology capabilities that must be available to support Chemical and Biological Defense Program (CBDP) research, development, test and evaluation, and operational activities, and provide guidance on which of these capabilities can be obtained outside the Military Service laboratories, which are unavailable except in the Military Service laboratories, and which are so mission-critical (classified, nonproliferation, or other) that they should be maintained in the Military Ser dce laboratories. It will review relevant Department of Defense (DoD) studies and other pertinent literature, and conduct site visits and interviews with all necessary CBDP and DoD Laboratory stakeholders to collect the data to accomplish the study objectives. The Academy operates under its own Bylaws which are approved by the IFMBE General Assembly. The Academy is to conduct programs which will serve to encourage young people entering the field and their development in the early stages of their career. 

Today, the evaluation of risk and the systematic targeting of high-risk areas for elimination or reduction are ongoing components of managerial responsibility, which is framed by competitive forces that demand continuous improvement in operational performances. Dupont committed to improving the reactor maintenance program at the Savannah River Site (SRS) based on the results of audits performed by the National Academy of Scientists and Engineers (NAS E) and the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO). In February 1989, Dupont issued an SRS-wide Maintenance Improvement Plan identifying eight key elements that were in need of improvement. One of these elements was the performance of a self-assessment by the Reactor Maintenance Department based on the elements identified in INPO 85-038, Guidelines for the Conduct of Maintenance at Nuclear Power Stations (Reference 1). The self-assessment was to include a review of (1) work control procedures, (2) maintenance requests, (3) supervision of maintenance activities, (4) review of completed maintenance requests, (5) temporary repairs, and (6) control of contractor personnel. This assessment (Reference 2) was completed in January 19.90. The results of the assessment, which were compared against draft DOE Order 5480, established the foundation for the Reactbr Maintenance Improvement Plan (MIP)(Reference 3), which was issued the end of April 1990.
