Appllca.tlons. The principal appHcations of nickel-base superalloys are in gas turbines, where they are utilized as blades, disks, and sheet metal parts. Abcraft gas turbines utilized in both commercial and military service depend upon superalloys for parts exposed to peak metal temperatures in excess of 1000°C. Typical gas turbine engines produced in the United States in 1990 utilized nickel and cobalt-base superalloys for 46% of total engine weight (41). However, programs for future aerospace propulsion systems emphasize the need for lightweight materials having greater heat resistance. For such apphcations, intermetallics matrix composites and ceramic composites are expected to be needed. [Pg.123]

I began work at Eli Lilly and Company in March 1942 as a laboratory aide in the analytical department. At that time, there was very little sophisticated instrnmentation in the laboratory. The most complex calculations were carried ont nsing a slide rnle. After military service in World War II and an edncational leave of absence to complete my nndergraduate studies in chemistry at Indiana University, I retnrned to the Lilly analytical group in 1947. Slide rnles were still much in evidence bnt were soon augmented with mechanical calcnlators— usually Monroe or Friden models. [Pg.5]

The outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 made work at Leipzig extremely difficult. Many students and postgraduates were called up for military service. In the further course of the war, the Institute suffered much damage from bombing. In spite of all these difficulties, Helferich attempted to maintain the functions of the Institute until, finally, in 1945, after 15 very successful years, he was evacuated to the Western Zone by the American forces of occupation. [Pg.2]

Threats of Concern Terrorist acts can be the most problematic to defend against since they may be more extreme or malevolent than other crimes focused on monetary gains or outcomes with less malicious intent. Plus terrorists may use military tactics not often provided for in base chemical facility design. Chemical facility security must be considered in context with local and national homeland security and law enforcement activities, as well as with emergency response capabilities. There is a practical limit to the ability of a chemical site to prevent or mitigate a terrorist act. Above a certain level of threat, the facility needs to rely on law enforcement and military services to provide physical security against extreme acts of intentional harm. The security posture must be risk-based, and so extremely robust security measures are not always applicable or necessary. [Pg.106]

Vaccines Vaccinia virus is a live poxvirus that can lead to strong cross-protection to smallpox for about five years, plus partial protection for ten or more years. If your are old enough, or have been in military service in recent years, you may have been vaccinated with this vaccine administered by dermal scarification, or intra-dermal jet injection. However, certain persons should NOT receive smallpox vaccine, including persons who are pregnant, persons who underwent a clinical immunosuppresion, persons with eczema, or persons with leukemia or lymphoma. [Pg.176]

Herman took his final examination in July, 1913. At that time military service was mandatory for all young men, thus his only decision was whether to go directly into the army for his one year s service, or to take his studies at the University and then serve. He, after consultation with his father, enlisted as a private in the elite Alpine infantry unit, the Kaiserschutzen regiment. He was immediately stationed in the mountains of South Tirol. [Pg.10]

The military will continue with its fuel infrastructure of high sulfur diesel (up to 1,000 ppm sulfur by weight) and jet fuel (JP-8). Sulfur specification will remain high because the military has to consider worldwide fuel sources. High sulfur diesel and JP-8 are close in characteristics so no fuel flexibility is required. However, there is a possibility that some parts of the military or the Coast Guard (a military service within the DOT) could use fuels more compatible to the fuel cell in limited applications. [Pg.202]

The draft thereafter languished in our files until 1997, when we took the liberty of extracting portions of it for inclusion in a chapter on Incapacitating Agents, subsequently published in the first edition of the Textbook of Military Medicine. Goodman himself was lost to our tracking station soon after he completed his compulsory two years of military service. Despite several attempts, we could not find him, hoping to persuade him to complete and publish the manuscript. This... [Pg.15]
