Curriculum materials

Curriculum development at the K-12 level goes hand-and-hand with teacher training. The development of green chemistry curriculum materials must involve collaboration between the green chemistry researchers and the K-12 teacher. Several approaches have been found to be effective in developing curriculum, which can be applied in the K-12 classroom.

The National Science Resources Center Is operated by the Smithsonian Institution and the National Academy of Sciences to Improve the teaching of science in the nation s schools. The NSRC is located In the Arts and Industries Building of the Smithsonian Institution and in the Capital Gallery Building In Washington, D.C. 

Whilst we will focus where possible on aspects of curriculum materials developed for use in chemistry teaching, the fact the majority of materials with a context-based approach have been developed for use at the secondary level means that they very often embrace chemistry as part of a science course. It is in any case a feature of context-based approaches that the science they embrace ramifies beyond the traditional subject disciplines, reflecting the realities of the way science is applied in practice.

Novick Nussbam (16) conducted a cross-age stucfy in early work on the topic to show that students hold misconceptions about nature and behavior of particles. They found that many misconceptions are not overcome widi age. For example, over 60% of high school and university students did not picture empty space between gas particles, and more than 50% of these students did not show uniform distribution of gas particles in a closed flask. In addition, less than 50% of these students correctly indicated that the uniform particle distribution was due to constant particle motion. The study recommended that instructors should be aware of such misconceptions by solicting students ideas concerning chemistry concepts and should use this knowledge to prepare curriculum materials. At this point, it was not known exactly what one could use to combat these misconceptions dealing with phenomena that could not be seen.

In traditional chemistry education usually refers to an example of a practical application of chemical concepts already studied. Along with the curriculum demand, such concept-led applications become a kind of justification for learning chemical concepts. A traditional approach as this will not enhance students motivation to leam chemistry topics (cf Van Berkel, De Vos, Verdonk Pilot, 2000). Some safety programs require documentation of safety training for students taking laboratory courses. If the course curriculum material shows that safety topics are included in the laboratory, and the student pre-lab reports referred to above are retained, the need for documentation may be satisfied. 

In addition, there are many curriculum materials on the internet which try to offer teachers ideas on how to do classical chemistry experiments with materials from everyday life (e.g. see the UNESCO database). These alternatives may combine the idea of micro-scale (small scale) kit approaches with the principle of low-cost experimental equipment e.g. where the traditional laboratory glassware (or micro-scale glassware) may be replaced by less expensive alternatives, often made of plastic. One such example is the project Student Active Learning in Science (SALiS) which offers a guide and collection of examples for low-cost equipment and experiments.
