Operating instructional manual

All operators were trained in the site operations based on the U.S. EPA "Operation and Maintenance Manual for Precipitation Measurement Systems" (6) and the UAPSP "Field Operator Instruction Manual" (7). Daily site visits were generally made at about 9 00 a.m. local time to check the equipment and to remove any precipitation collected by the daily samplers. Weekly samples were removed on Monday from the Georgia and Vermont sites and on Tuesday at the Kansas site. If no event occurred for a week, the buckets were rinsed with deionized water to remove any dust that may have deposited and they were then reused. Analysis of the rinse water served as a dynamic blank.

Appropriate use Each instrument is made for specific purpose and it should be used for the same. Operational reliability is ensured only if the instrument is properly used according to the specifications in the operating instructions manual as well as possible supplementary instructions. 

Caution All manufacturers of boilers usually supply operating instruction manuals with their equipment. Before starting the unit, be sure that the manual of instructions has been thoroughly read and understood.

As with any power equipment, gas turbines require a program of planned inspections with repair or replacement of damaged components. A properly designed and conducted inspection and preventive maintenance program can do much to increase the availability of gas turbines and reduce unscheduled maintenance. Inspections and preventive maintenance can be expensive, but not as costly as forced shutdowns. Nearly all manufacturers emphasize and describe preventive maintenance procedures to ensure the reliability of their machinery, and any maintenance program should be based on manufacturer s recommendations. Inspection and preventive maintenance procedures can be tailored to individual equipment application with references such as the manufacturer s instruction book, the operator s manual, and the preventive maintenance checklist. 

For a quality manual to be a manual it should contain the procedures and instructions, as does a computer manual or a car maintenance manual, so whether one volume of the manual contains or refers to other documents does not prevent the collection of documents being referred to as the quality manual. Manuals tend to include operating instructions, hence the word manual. The quality manual should therefore contain all the policies and practices but not necessarily in one volume. 

Mode of operation. Before use, it is obviously necessary to become familiar with the instruction manual issued with the pH meter it is proposed to employ, but the general procedure for making a pH measurement is similar for all instruments, and will follow a pattern such as that detailed below. 

Operating manuals give the detailed, step by step, instructions for operation of the process and equipment. They would normally be prepared by the operating company personnel, but may also be issued by a contractor as part of the contract package for a less experienced client. The operating manuals would be used for operator instruction and training, and for the preparation of the formal plant operating instructions. 

The analyses of trouble and the required counteractions will depend on the operation principles of the operator, the value of a lyophilizatiion charge, the sensitivity of the product on deviations from the set values, and several other factors. Nevertheless, an analysis of possible problems and a guideline for counteractions should be established for every freeze drying plant as part of the instruction manual, even if it has to be adjusted for new products.

Before using any equipment, read the instruction manual for operating conditions and the limitations of the instruments. 

We now consider procedures that do not involve synthesis (excerpts 3M—30). There are literally hundreds of such procedures in chemistry however, these few excerpts illustrate essential features of how such procedures are generally written. As in syntheses, nonsynthetic procedures begin with a descriptive subheading following the subheading, the procedure is described in concise, complete sentences, including only those details needed by an expert audience. Such details are often quantitative in nature (e.g., the number of cells to plate). Information that is largely for students (e.g., zero the balance ) or available elsewhere (e.g., instructions from an operator s manual) is omitted. 

Compressor Seal Problems The extent of the leakage past the seals where the shaft comes through the casing frequently limits the running time of the compressor, yet the seals and the seal systems are not given adequate treatment in the maintenance manuals or in the operating instructions furnished by the compressor manufacturer. 

Oil flows and critical clearances are not spelled out well in either the operating instructions or the maintenance manuals. Because of this, several maintenance technique improvements are needed ... 

The operation instruction, maintenance, and calibration should be included in the SOP. It is not necessary to copy the entire operation manually into the SOP. Writing simple instructions with references to the related sections in the manual is a better way. The frequency and tasks to be performed during maintenance should be stated in the maintenance section. The tests required to calibrate the instrument, the acceptance criteria, and the frequency for each test should be included in the calibration section of the SOP. Definitions of major and minor repairs which necessitate partial or full system requalification should be included as well. For example, the replacement of a UV lamp in a UV detector does not require full requalification whereas replacement of a circuitry board will. 

A misapplication of the special features of an integrator could easily result from a failure to follow the fine print portion of the instructions. Of course, sometimes the instructions, manuals, and explanations of the complete functions of various operating parameters are less than lucid. Poorly phrased instructions could result from language problems—"the electronics man who cannot talk to the computer man who cannot talk to the chemist," and where the sales representative fits is anybody s guess. A cursory explanation could be the result of the reluctance of an instrument manufacturer to reveal too much about some feature he chooses to consider proprietary. Any such situation is either unfortunate or inexcusable, depending on viewpoint. 

Describe the detailed procedure to be followed to check the calibration of the instrument over its certified operating range and process failure limits (to ensure that it is within the tolerances specified in the manufacturer instruction manual and aligns with the requirements specified in the respective instrument specification/data sheet). 

Approved SOPs must be in place before OQ commences. This will ensure operating instructions are performed in the same way each time and enable defined manual operations to be verified. Any revisions to an operational SOP (and associated documents) found necessary during OQ must be implemented under change control, and all affected documentation revised and reissued ready for retesting and use during PQ. 

There is a further non-trivial distinction between consumer products and the opportunities that arise from travel purchases. Most consumer products of some complexity come with an owner s manual. These kinds of documents provide operational instructions, safety hints, advice on replacement parts or persons to whom one can direct service inquiries. Perhaps the closest parallel in the world of tourist behaviour is the guidebook. Even here, however, there is a range of guide books for any one place. The holiday consumer is free to consult multiple owner manuals, to redesign and further refine his or her experience.
